Anyone using a Kanex Thunderbolt to USB 3 adapter on MacBook?

Hi, guys. I’ve been going crazy trying to get an OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock to work on my late 2011 MBP. Short story is that the USB 3.0 ports will not work on this era Mac and it seems like that issue is buried in the OWC paperwork. Lots of people on Amazon are saying they’re using this same setup and it’s great but it doesn’t work for me.
I spent the morning searching this site and haven’t seen an answer so I’m submitting here. BTW, the Kanex gets some good reviews and, again, people are saying they’re hooking up an old Mac and getting 3.0 speeds. Sounds pretty good for 80 bucks while the OWC was $200.

Hello:

There is a website for that adapter: (includes drivers / PDF - (User / Owners manual there) etc.

www.kanex.com/thunderbolt-esata

Should offer some help...

Thanks for your time,

Have a nice day -

Thanks, Ed. I’ve done a lot of research on the Kanex and anything else out there that claims to do the job. Problem is all of them have people saying they have no problems with their early Mac and an equal number saying it doesn’t work for them. I guess I could just buy them one at a time and start a collection of docks to match my camera stuff.

So are you saying that the OWC dock you had previously purchased, doesn't "do something" you are trying to do?

Not sure exactly if I follow?

The OWC does not recognize any of the 5 USB 3.0 ports on the dock. The only port that does anything is the HDMI for the external monitor. Depending on who you listen to it’s because my 2011 MacBook does not support this unit. However, there’s at least 100 people on web reviews that claim they’re using this same setup and loving it.

I'm using the Kanex unit and am quite happy. My early 2011 MacBook Pro gets along just fine with the adapter.

Thanks, wicook. Can you confirm you’re getting 3.0 speeds through the adapter? Also, did you have to download any special drivers or modify any programming through Terminal?
