...the art of seeing.* One of my instructors at Cal State LA said it was the art of "seeing light". And constantly told us that the three most important things were: 1. learn your gear so you can control the output 2. learn composition so your images are worth looking at and 3. "Learn to see the light."
*Most people "look", not all "see".

OK, here is the answer of I was hoping someone would get.
Photography Is The Manipulation Of Light.
This is the very basic definition of photography.
All steps of photography manipulate light, whether to control it, record it, or present it to a viewer.
It's all about the light.
This is information that I got out of a book titled "Light - Science & Magic" Fourth Edition.
An Introduction to Photographic Lighting.
This is probably the most comprehensive book on photographic lighting that I have come across.

Are you an alias for Chris T?
{Having just one, controversial, answer judged as correct}
some of us would disagree with having the word 'manipulated' in the definition -I record the light that is there; I don't intentionally manipulate anything

Sorry, but you do manipulate the light with your camera by changing aperture, shutter speed, or ISO.
These things change how the original light passing through the lens is recorded on a sensor or film plane.
