I've been trying to learn how to change backgrounds with Elements 13 and have gone a little crazy. There's still much to learn about getting the selection tools right and not ending up with weird fragments. I've gone from very dark backgrounds to the following with a gradient filter thrown into the mix. To say these are experiments would be appropriate. Hopefully they make some kind of visual sense after taking my rather scruffy horse, winter coat and all, out of a relatively busy background.

Vicki, excellent work.

I'm sort of working on this as well (as in not really paying it as much attention as it needs). A club member took a portrait of me and placed me in front of a rusty corrugated sheet. So far as I can see there's not a missing pair on the cutout. He recommended GLYNN DEWIS - THE MAGIC OF GREY on You Tube. See if this helps.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply Jim. This is all new to me. Until I've really gotten a feel for what I've doing some of the terms and effects are a bit alien. I did clone some hairs in a few places but wasn't successful in places where either the direction of the hairs or the colors were off. I need to learn more about how masks work, too. As I play with the tools, more things make sense and become easier.

You'r doing a great job. Many never get to the level your at now just give up on the layers. Congratulations for sticking to it.

You have done a great job with them Vicki. I noticed in one answer you said you used old pictures so you wont ruin them. I always work on a copy of the picture and if it turns out ok I then save it with another name so the original picture is always safe...

You’re definitely making great progress, Vicki. Your backgrounds are very flattering and you’re really getting the hang of it!

You've done very well Vicki, especially since you are using Elements as your editor. I made several frustrating attempts at using Elements 10 to mask out a Longhorn Steer from a desert background and finally decided that it's a waste of time to try to control that dance-line of parading ants.

Fast forward to last year when I tried (purchased) On1 Photo RAW 2017. The program works good as a photo editor and showed promise for masking so I tried some serious masking projects. The program back then crashed frequently but tenacity prevailed and with the 2018 release, the program is now stable and most masking is a breeze using fewer tools that have more power and better control for those pesky hairs. There are lots of short videos to help with masking that already exist... I don't even attempt to use Elements any more.
