Nikon D5100 problem

When I take a picture the back screen and image on the card are both diagonally black from the upper right corner to the bottom left corner. 16,000 shutter activations which seems low for a problem that might require shutter replacement. Any suggestions other than a hammer? Thanks! Not sure how to look for your reply...new ti UHH.

What? At only 16k? Yikes, a good friend on mine has the same model camera! Actually it does not even sound like a shutter issue unless the curtain itself broke loose on one edge. Does it do this with all lenses? Stuck iris / aperture blade? Dead pixels should be in rows or columns I believe, not diagonals. Something large get in side mirror / shutter box? Seems really weird. Good luck!

Take off the lens and carefully lift the mirror to reveal the shutter itself. Is a blade out of place? Can you see part of the sensor? Yes, you likely have a shutter failure.

I'm going with do a visual check. Remove the lens and set the camera to lock mirror up if that is an option. See if anything is blocking the sensor or hanging down.

Good luck.
