Hello all. I am relatively new to digital photography and very, very green. I fell in love with photography back in high school and took a lot of pictures with my Pentax SLR, but I never really studied or took the steps necessary to perfect the craft. My kids are practically all grown now, (2 still in high school), so I decided to pick up a hobby that could possibly generate some part-time income. My Pentax is long gone so I did some research and recently purchased a Nikon D3400. I'm curious to know from all of you out there what pitfalls and considerations I will need to take into account, if I am considering turning this hobby into a small business?

Thank you in advance for your feedback!

Welcome to the forum. I would suggest joining a photography club if you have one in your area. Perhaps you can handle some of their equipment and see what ergonomically fits well in your hands. The advantages of a club are many for anyone getting started in photography.

Hello all. I am relatively new to digital photogra... (show quote)

Pitfalls? That's not a place I would start. It's just like any other business venture, business skills, people skills, knowing the markets (which mean, knowledge of niches). When doing a photography business, it's what I said, a business like any other business and it is that first, photography mostly takes on a distant second, although you should know your ins- and outs, eyes closed. It will be a long road (but fun to travel on ), if you have what it takes!

Welcome! If I were you, I would strongly consider classes at a local college to ramp up your self-evaluation of your current and future skills and goals. You’ll get much more speed and enjoyment of your path forward.

Welcome to UHH FatherTime, glad you joined us. I don't know if you would call it a pitfall but there is a lot of completion out there in the photography business. Anyone with a camera or smart phone thinks they can shoot a wedding or senior pictures, etc. They have another job so they bid these jobs low. They may or may not turn out a high quality product. Then there is the cost factor, quality equipment is not cheap.
Have fun, learn and enjoy the forum.
