Navy Shutting Down Combat Camera Groups

As an ex Navy Combat Photographer (CombatCamGruLant) out of Norfolk Naval Air Station in the 60s, I am saddened to see the demise of these elite photography groups in the Navy….. I suppose this kind of move is symptomatic of cutbacks in the military in general even though our current administration is pushing to increase funding. 😰 Most of our photographic history of wars was recorded by these guys.....

Look up USS Astoria on YouTube . Wonderful photographs and 16mm footage of her in WW2 shot by a Navy combat photographer .
I suppose with the advent of cell phones everyone is taking photos now . However , you can’t replace a trained photographer as it pertains to photo journalism or historical / technical documentation . Perhaps they will reactivate the rate of photographers-mate when they realize how important and valuable it is .
