I say go for it. You will have a great experience and learn something and later you will be glad you did. In the late 70's I attended a Pacer game in Indianapolis, had my Yashica ElectroX and noticed the photographers sitting under the hoops on floor at both ends. I nervously got up from my seat, snuck down there and followed a couple of guys who were adjusting their positions, acted the same as them and took a lot of clicks. Great shots, fun, and a fine way to watch the game. Nobody even noticed I wasn't press. Have fun!

Now I found out her father is a photographer with a well known and good reputation in our area. I don't know if I can go thru the shame of using my ancient hand me down d70 and my budget lens options. Again I am very much just dipping my toe in the water and am really nervous about displaying my lack of skill and knowledge, let alone my "learning" budget based photography kit. Am I just being a wimp? Part of me wants to go for it anyway and not care but I can't shake the nervousness lol

I can't tell if you are going to the event or shooting some nice poses before the event.
Why don't you rent some lenses. That's what I did here in these shots for my Son when he went to Prom.
Go for it. Semi formal only comes once and u will want and treasure the memories đ
Drop back 5 and punt, or take 2 and hit to right. I have no idea what either of these mean, but they were in general use when I was a young man, and I am now 85. Film and Kodachrome Forever.

If my pictures turn out half as beautiful I will consider myself blessed...thank you so much for sharing... beautifully done

You didnât answer a question at all - you launched a personal name-calling assault. Whatâs pathetic is that you feel the need to display your obvious perpetual personal anger in an otherwise congenial thread and then try to pass it off as a âcourageous directâ answer. Although you occasionally actually contribute some photographic knowledge and good photos, itâs behavior like this that has you at the top of so many Ignore lists, and thatâs a shame if youâre actually a serious photographer and want productive interactions with other members.

I learned a new word the other day. Actually two words. Curmudgeon and Misanthrope. Look them up. I found them to be rather descriptive of our friend.
Whiner! Just do it! Why wonder "what if". Equipment does matter, but it does not insure great images. That is always left to the person behind the lens.

That came out so nice
Thank you. I hope the OP has a good time.

Lol...if it were just the equipment I was worried about I would not have posed the question....I'm a very green photographer and have never made claims of being an artist...I work with my hands follow prints and designs etc....the artistry is my highest challenge...that being said I have a deep appreciation for tools and knowledge, so without a doubt there will be some camera envy I'm suređ

Thank you. I did them at the park down the street where there is an old restored mill.
I would call the girl's Dad up before the event and ask for tips before the event. I'm sure he will be overjoyed to help you. You may make a new friend.
Let her father know that you don't have experience but would like to take some photos
and would appreciate any suggestions he might make. Ask him if he would share some of his
photos with you. Good luck and have a good time at the wedding

Cameras donât take photographs, people do. You can do this and, odds are, youâll get some very good images out of it.
This was the advice I would have given if rjaywallace hadn't beat me to it. Wonderful photographs can be made with almost any camera. Expensive cameras are tougher, more likely to accept water splashes, can use faster shutter speeds, have larger apertures, and a few other benefits, none of which are necessary for most photos.

You have two days to go. Don't get so nervous that you forget to charge the battery to the camera. Check the memory card and prepare it. Then take pictures of your son and his date. He's lucky. I did not have any dates at age 14. Not until age 16.
