Nah, it's rude and inconsiderate people like you that make the rest of us sad. Are you so angry with yourself that you have to take it out on others?

Similar situation happened to me as a surprise. Special event, I offered to take photos, got to the event and the super enthusiast/GAS guy with the huge Cannon lenses (the white barrels are impressive) and the super expensive body had bogarted the spot that I had pre selected and had worked out my lighting/background for. I bowed out, intimidated by his "gear" and went to a secondary location and went with a short lens and hand held with much more difficult lighting. Turns out, he just handed over the SD card to the event coordinator while I had a bit of PP work to do. When all was said and done, my little d3400 and kit 17-55 lens with a little PP work provided the pictures that were distributed to parents and were used in the publication for the event!! I couldn't have been prouder. I worked harder, found interesting angles for composition, and didn't let my GAS or his get in the way!! Still jonesin' for a d7200 and some cool glass, but am not intimidated by the gear heads anymore. Go, shoot, do your thing and have FUN!!!!

I’d personally say, go for it! You do you. Take “your” photos and be proud of what “you” did. Who knows, you can probably pick up some tricks or knowledge. I have found through my course of learning, that other photographers are really helpful and don’t care what you shoot with as long as you are shooting and having fun. I hope this helps. ~Mike

Right on!!

Now I found out her father is a photographer with a well known and good reputation in our area. I don't know if I can go thru the shame of using my ancient hand me down d70 and my budget lens options. Again I am very much just dipping my toe in the water and am really nervous about displaying my lack of skill and knowledge, let alone my "learning" budget based photography kit. Am I just being a wimp? Part of me wants to go for it anyway and not care but I can't shake the nervousness lol

Don’t sweat it just do it. Would you stop driving your car if he was a race car driver? Capture the moment of your Son and his girl. That moment will never be there again.

Go for it anyway, as a photographer himself he knows we all started somewhere. I'm sure he'll be happy to give you pointers, most are willing to share their knowledge and expertise. Unless he was wealthy from the get go, I'm sure he started with what you're calling a poor man's kit too. Good luck and keep shooting regardless of who's around and watching.

Cameras don’t take photographs, people do. You can do this and, odds are, you’ll get some very good images out of it.

Hey, 1st, you are shooting digital so you can always make adjustments/changes. 2nd, if you are using Lightroom or one of the other post processing programs, the images would have to be really bad for you not to be able to pull out some okay to decent shots. Additionally, this is a learning experience and if the other father is halfway decent, he may (if nothing else) offer some critics about how to improve your shots... getting taught any subject is usually humbling. And that D70 is still a good (if not limited) camera. I started my DSLR experience with a D70s that FINALY died last Christmas. I was still using it as my backup camera when it died. Sure the shots were only 6mp or so but when properly framed and with decent lenses, remember that when that camera was new, it was near the top of the line for a Nikon DSLR and at that time. And yes cameras have improved and there is not a good comparison of that 6mp compact flash card and the newer, much higher capacity and much faster SD and other sizes of cards (this is assuming you can still get cards for the D70, as I was having difficulty getting 4gb cards and below for my D70s) but all of my lenses, with the exception of the new silent wave motor (SWM) lenses fit fine and worked. Yes, you could upgrade your camera (you probably wouldn't have to upgrade your lenses) but money is tight and that can be difficult. However, if you decide, you can probably get a good used camera body that will work with your lenses from KEH, Adorama, B&H and other good camera retailers that would give you a warrantee on the newer body. Trading the D70 in is an option on a newer used camera or new camera but you wont get much for it and it might be more useful to you as a backup camera.

Don't blame me. I simply answered the questioned asked. If you want to find someone offensive, simply look in the mirror.

Back at ya. Lots of you folks are wimps because you don't have the intelligence or courage to provide a direct answer to a direct question. The OP asked if he was a wimp. I answered it. If you don't want an answer, don't ask a question. Geesus. Pathetic.

I've often said that my camera exceeds my abilities by a country mile. I expect that's the case for most of us. Go for it, or you'll forever be in the shadow of the pro., (who had to start somewhere).

As most all have said "Go for it" !!! Nothing ventured, nothing gained. Maybe the pro will learn something from you.
