I presently shoot a Canon 50d, with Tamron 18-270 mm lens. I am thinking doubling the max of my zoom to 540 mm by using a telephoto converter lens. This len screws into the filter threads of my Tamron Lens. What can I expect, as far as quality from this Converter? I live on a wide canal in Southern Louisiana, I like to photo the shore birds along the canal. The 270 just does not have enough reach to photo bird on the far bank.
Hey Bill, I don't know how to answer your question as I have thought about this myself. I have a 70-300 Kit lens and I would like to reach out farther say 140 to 600 with a 2x extender but I don't think Canon has it for that lens.
Have you gone out to Bayou Sauvage in New Orleans East? Lots of birds out there, and gators. How about Honey Island Swamp around the town of Pearl River or Slidell? Some places a 270mm is all you will need.

Based on very little but some past experience, I would venture to guess that the use of "auxiliary lenses" (that's the general term for what you are proposing) is liable to severely affect sharpness.
Hello Bangee5, Thanks for your input. I may be able to help you out. I have a 2x conversion lens that came with my kit lenses for my 50d. I have sold all the kit lenses, and now only have my Tamron 18-270, it has a 62mm filter size. The 2x converter will not fit since it is (think 55mm) much smaller in diameter. Since you seem to be local, I could lend it to you to try. I am planning on getting more Canon glass in the future.
I know of these swamp, or Bayous. I also have a very picturesque backyard. Yesterday I took a drive to the trail head of the new hiking trail in Belle Chase. This turned into a waste of time. The hiking trail along the canal is completly over grown with weeds about waist high, and very thick. The Parish is resurfacing Hebert Rd, so I had to make a long detore. The potental for the trail is great, the donors should step up for trail maintainence money. The horse path is good, but has deep pebbles and is difficult to walk on.

Hello once more Bill. This 2x conversion Lens you are talking about, it fits onto the front of the lens? I am thinking more along the line of a '2x Converter or extender that fits between camera and lens. I have a set of close-up lens. All of my lens use 58mm filter size. I would like a 400mm Telephoto Lens - for what I have no idea?
Do you belong to a local camera club? If so, Infor please.
I tried my friends 2xTC on one of my lenses and I was very unhappy with the results. You might want to start with a 1.4x.
I ordered a 2x converter from PCrush. I found they did not know how to list the converter. I have a Tamron 18-270mm lens, it takes a 62mm filter. The converter would have to have 62mm threads on the end that fits to the lens, it has 58mm there, and 62mm on the open end. Back to the drawing boards.

I would not use one that screws in like a filter. I would use a teleconverter that goes between the lens and body if anything.
Drawing board results. I just ordered a new Tamron AF 200=500mm lens. It is for a full frame camera, so I'll get max about 750mm problem solved. It will be here Monday, or Tuesday. I'll be planning a trip in the field the very next day.
Thanks for all your information, and help.

Good for you! I can't wait to see how it works out for you.

I would not use a converter that screws to the front of the lens, it's not a real 2x converter, just magnifying glass. You need to have a converter that attaches between the body and the lens. I have the tamron 1.4x and love it
