Question: D810 and MB-D12 Issue

I have a D810 and MB-D12 battery grip. Without the grip attached, the information in "Setup Menu/Battery Info" properly shows the details for the battery in the camera (% Charge, # Shots, and Battery Age).

The D810 seems to recognize when the MB-D12 battery grip is attached....the green LED flashes momentarily when the electrical connection is made. When attached, the information in "Setup Menu/Battery Info" still shows the details for the battery in the camera, and now has a "grayed-out" image for the external battery in the MB-D12 grip....showing only dashes (--) for that battery's information. Also, inserting or removing the battery tray in the gip causes the LED to flash....suggesting to me that the camera is sensing the battery in the grip. I have the camera programmed to draw power from the grip first....then to the main battery.

I have read the manuals with no remedy. I've Googled the situation, and found many users describing the same issue as the one I describe.

My question: Have you experienced this issue, and how did you correct it? (I am assuming that information should be displayed for both batteries when the grip is attached)

Thank you in advance for your thoughtful response.

The obvious answer would be to contact Nikon Support.

Yes, that might seem the obvious answer..... I have logged onto the Nikon site and have entered my question for their support team. Each time I do, I get a message that the function could not be completed at this time...refresh the screen or try again later.

I was hoping for a solution from this forum....rather than this type of brain-dead response.

Just an FYI. I have the D800 with the grip and don't have that issue. I do see the green light flash when I set the camera down (sometimes) because the switch in the camera body that gets activated when you turn the lock is "just" making. I tried different scenarios like removing battery from pack, removing pack completely, and leaving lock unlatched but menu still looks normal.

The greying out sounds like a software issue to me worthy of calling Nikon. They may have an update you can download. Good luck.

One last thought. Make certain BOTH batteries are Nikon.

Thanks Tanker. Both batteries are new, charged and genuine Nikon. I'll continue to try a call to Nikon on Monday.

I have a D810 with MB-D12 grip and going into battery info, i find both batteries listed -nothing greyed out.
What I find interesting is that even though I have 2 batteries in the camera, the currently used one in the grip at 40% power, the one in the camera at 92% power -mirror lock up for sensor cleaning is greyed out- if i take out the 40% charged battery leaving the 90% in camera or in the grip, mirror lock up for cleaning is active. i guess the "currently in use" battery must be over 50% charged so mirror lock up for cleaning works.

Interesting, Tenor57. I'm guessing the software engineers designed it that way to protect the sensor/mirror assembly in case of insufficient power.

I agree with you. I have also logged on to the Nikon site seeking information, receiving a response along the lines that my inquiry has been logged and someone will get back to me as soon as possible, and usually that has been a few days. When calling, you go through queue’s and sometimes are advised no one is available, call back later. I see asking fellow UHH’s as an acceptable alternative. Perhaps some are bothered by alternative methods of seeking out information.....

By your explanation, it sounds like user error. If you are attaching or removing the grip with the camera turned on, or removing or adding batteries with the camera switch to the on position, you may have messed up the electronics in the camera body. Time to contact Nikon.

Nope. Camera always off when connecting/disconnecting battery or pack.

Finally contacted Nikon. A very patient and articulate representative led me through a complete power-down/reset, etc. No remedy yet. Representative will continue researching the issue and get back to me.

Because of my age, I only buy ripe bananas. Wonder whether I'll live long enough to get this resolved.

In the custom menu of your camera you can set it up anyway you want. Or, you may want to go back to the default settings on the camera. I never use two batteries. I always just use one battery in the vertical grip. I carry an extra battery with me. That way I never have to remove the vertical grip.

From Nikon USA

•To ensure that the shutter is not damaged, this procedure requires that the camera be powered by an AC adapter (available separately). Turn the camera off and connect to the correct AC adapter. An AC Adapter is recommended for prolonged inspection or cleaning. If battery power is used, the Mirror up option will not work if the battery level is less than full. If the battery level drops during CCD inspection, the shutter will close, and the mirror will return to its start position. For this reason, make sure your battery is fully charged before proceeding.
