I need to do some basic accounting, journals, trial balance, balance sheet, income statement. I don't want to pay a subscription. Many years ago I used both QB and Peachtree, they do just what I want. I was surfing on the Bay and I see some available, sometimes with the caveat that there is no guarantee that the license will work. Based on the general experience of the group, is there any reason to not buy a 20 year old version of either of these? After all, debits and credits haven't changed in hundreds of years. I appreciate all opinions.

If the caveat that there is no guarantee that the license will work you are taking a gamble. The gamble is that the license will not activate the program you paid $$$$$ for.

Perhaps you might want to post this in the chit chat section instead of the main photography section.
Years ago, I used Quick Books and Peachtree to keep track of of both my business and personal accounting needs. I found Peachtree to be a very good, professional package well beyond the needs of simple debits and credits. Where Peachtree was well beyond Quickbooks in ease and versatility, I respectfully recommend that you consider the program, Quicken as an alternative to the aforementioned other two as far as ease of use and price point.
Chit Chat is exactly where I first saw this post. At the top of each digest is an 'upcoming' section.

Quick books 'does everything' in a structured entry way - so trying to understand what it is doing is a pain. It links to cheques and bank statements, stocks and bonds etc so is way more than a simple accounting system.
KISS works !!!!- everyone who needs to see your accounts will work with excel spreadsheets. The workbook will auto sum columns and rows as well as between pages. We have run two businesses for over 15 years. Accountant, Local authority,Inland Revenue, etc all accept an excell spreadsheet.
Not only can you see what you are doing (changing mistakes etc) you can make all the fancy pie charts that you want.
Once set up, you can simply make a copy and set all entry cells to 0 value. Then start again from your new year.
It is the simplest way to work!
If you havent got a speadsheet download Libre office for free. set it to default to an excell file format.
have fun
Gnucash is a free option if you are looking for a double entry bookkeeping system. It works on linux, but I think it will also work on windoze. Google it. We use it all the time.

I could be mistaken, but when I first read it, it was in the main photography section and has now (correctly) been moved.

Excel is a great way to your accounting work. I know large companies that use Excel. However, I think that the OP is looking for a bookkeeping solution that is not as challenging as Excel can be.
I have Peachtree, have never used Quick Books. Peachtree does what I want, however, if your past the service date, have your credit card ready. Want the time of day from them? pay the price. They are not even interested in hearing about what the problem is unless they can charge you. Also I have sage 50 Premium Accounting - the new name for Peachtree - and I get a pop-up when I close the program telling me i am entitled to a new version and would I like to down load it now? When I do and enter my product ID it tells me it and invalid ID. Go figure !! Ok program but customer service is ONLY a pay us first if your expecting ANY help for ANYTHING.

I use Gnucash to keep the books for our homeowners association. It's truly free, it's recent and maintained. There is a user group (I don't participate). I find the software easy to use for the basics. I have not had any need to explore things like customized reports etc.

FYI... Quicken is now subscription only (and pricey at that) unless you buy an old version.

There is no harm in buying an older version if you want just the basic modules you mentioned. However, if you need online banking, mobile applications, etc., you may not find them in the 20 year old version. And, features like payroll that need to be updated often will not be current and cannot be updated in a version that is no longer supported.
Not sure how much the old editions are selling for on eBay. There are almost always discounts on the new editions. I believe the most recent edition of QB pro is about $200.
