The giraffes like to have them around because they pick the bugs off - so they are basically always together!

The birds are actually cleaning the animal of various bugs and parasites that live on the animal.
With the OP's permission I can post the same birds working on a black buffalo - in Kenya.

They are "oxpeckers" - they eat ticks, and will reach into ears and nostrils where the ticks will congregate, so it is a true symbiotic relationship...
Here is on one the face of a rhino. He would go so far in the ear that you couldn't see him!
