It will probably work fine, you'll have an image area projected onto your sensor that will fill it edge to edge. Before you buy, go to a local camera store and try it out, or call Sigma and ask.
Their customer service is really friendly.

The first part is that it will easily outresolve your camera and can even handle the Canon 5DSR which is 50 MP.
The rest is that there are some specific hoods used in videography that have bellows expansion and other features.
And the rest you can get from the video section.

so, unless you have, say the Canon 5DSR, is it overkill? not gaining anything; should just buy a less expensive lens and the job will still be done well ?

It is never overkill. Just that they realized there are cameras systems and users they want to cater to as well as those with less mp sensors. If it works for the Canon 50 mp sensor it will be just fine for all the lesser sensors.
