Is there a way to assure corner-to-corner sharpness, other than by a wish and a prayer ... ?

Yes they are several ways.
At the moment I can only think of a few.
1) Study your scene
2) know your equiptment
3) be aware of the available light
4) a tri pod might help
I am sure other photogs will have better things to say

A macro lens might help.
A macro lens focus area is a flat field compared to a curved field from a normal lens.

I didn't know that!

Then, I guess I should keep right on using my 105 Macro as my "normal" on my Sony a77 II ....

I don't shoot many curved fields, anyway, Pete ... do you?
