One came with my Canon T7I camera. They cost over $50 which is outragius!! Is it safe to use generic LP-E17 batteries or will it damage the camera? Has anyone used a generic battery that works and if so what brand?

A lot of threads about aftermarket batteries. All generics do not perform the same, so do a search and you will see everything everyone has posted about various brands of third party replacements.

If a genuine Canon battery runs $50 for your camera, you should be glad it's not a LP-e6n for the 5D/7D series... $60+

If your camera is still under warranty, you should wait until it expires before getting an aftermarket battery.

I've been using Lenmar batteries for years with no problems, (but I didn't say that).

I've used third party batteries with success but I have found they have less shots per charge. If there is an electrical issue with the camera under warranty and a third party battery is discovered to have been used, don't count on it being repaired under at no cost.

How will they discover it?

I've read that there might be some telltale signs left in the electronics but I can't say for sure. On the other hand, when you send a camera back to them, they insist not to include a battery in the shipment.

Maybe you meant to say 1X ($140)? Hey I think, 60 bucks aint bad for a battery that runs everything in your camera, it is nothing in a camera that cost several thousands, why go cheap on a battery?

No, I was merely showing that the price for gernuine Canon batteries is well in line with the pricing he is seeing. Since he thinks the price of his is outrageous, it's all relative. Have never had problem one with a Canon battery, older ones show signs of age from camera's battery information, but that is after years of service. No complaints.
