Our first day out we headed for this remote area and spent a lot of time on rutted dirt roads, mainly what we call "two tracks". Almost all of this area can only be accessed by ATV's or 4x4 wheeled vehicles although we did it in our Subaru Outback...my wife says "never again"!

Wikipedia notes "that this area is approximately 75 by 40 miles and consists of a giant dome-shaped anticline of sandstone, shale and limestone that was pushed up during the Palocene Laramide Orogeny 60-40 million years ago. Since that time, infrequent but powerful flash floods have eroded the sedimentary rocks into numerous valleys, canyons, gorges, mesas and buttes".

Photos are in chronological order of our trip.

Now that's my kind of country (sans the snow, of course)! Have you driven the Waterpocket Fold? It's beautiful also.

Many thanks for stopping by, AZ...and we have done the Waterpocket Fold as recent as last February. The area around Capitol Reef is one of our favorite destinations.

Looks like an isolated, but hauntingly beautiful region. Tough place to make a living.

Agree with your take...they still run cattle there but mining and timber activities are all but gone. Uranium mining was big for a while but that boom has busted. It is becoming a favorite place for off road vehicles and cyclists so imagine tourism is picking for some of the local small towns. Thanks for looking and commenting!
