I wonder if the focus stacking feature from D850 could be added to D810 via software update?

It was added to The Olympus EM1 in an update.

I doubt that very much.

Can’t that be done in post?

I would not want it as it stands. If they optimized it like it is with the Helicon FB tube, it would be ridiculously super. I am sure they will do it eventually because it is chip driven in the FB tube.

I use the FB tube and post in Zerene Stacker with the 810. Very versatile in the field for hand stacking images.

Not very likely, as that would also call for some technical/physical changes (it's not entirely done by software alone)!

Theses features were included in version 4. Actually more but I couldn’t include all of it in the screenshot

With software the camera should be able to move the focus in small amount automatically for each shot. Then the the images are stacked with software. I don't think there is any hardware change needed except the feature may take up more memory than is available. Anyway I don't think Nikon would do that.

Sure can. The hard part is taking the shots with the focus changes in each shot and making sure the camera doesn't move. The stacking in post isn't difficult.

That is when a touch screen like what is on the Olympus cameras come in handy. Of course, the camera should sit on a tripod.

I think it would be doable, but I wouldn't hold my breath. With very few exceptions, Nikon does not add features to their cameras via firmware updates. Plus, Focus Stacking is a nice selling point for the D850, if they added it to the D810, that would just be one more reason to keep the D810 and not upgrade. If anything, I might expect it to be added to the D500 or D5 (D5 most likely).

I would bet a couple dozen Krispy Kreme's that Nikon would never do that. They add features to new bodies, in the hope that you sell off those old bodies and step up.

I certainly agree. They put it in the D850 as a almost no cost and yet an important feature. That way users of D810 would buy the D850.
