Yeah, you just feel safe because you think all the crazies are on our side of the big pond. But you never know.

If there is a plus side to xenophobes it's they are unlikely to hold a passport :)

There are people here from all over the world, at least 6 of the 7 continents are represented. Enjoy what they post, don't worry about where they are from. If they don't want to say or can't be bothered it isn't important.

That is all well and fine for strictly "camera talk", but it makes things a bit rough when one posts a picture of a flower or bird and asks "Does anybody know what species this is?" Most living things are regional and so location in general is useful to answer such a question. For example if someone were to post a photo of a Hummingbird photographed during the Winter if they indicated they shot it in their back yard in Los Angeles you (or I anyway) could say it is likely an Anna's or an Allen's Hummingbird because I know those are the only common Hummingbirds that stay all year in most of California. ID'ing a Butterfly does not take your mailing address just State and/or nearby Major City.

Whats the deal !!!! Why are the locations of so many member locations in hiding ... are you running from the law or just ashamed of where you live. It would be fun to know just how diverse the group is

I had someone respond to one of my opinion posts on post processing. It was clearly stated as my opinion and a person responded very curtly to me in a personal message - not on the forum. It made me uncomfortable enough to change my settings. I respect the right to withhold certain contact info based upon my experience.

I choose to remain anonymous. I have a wife, kid, and two dogs. There are too many crazies out there to endanger them.

Really now? Have you ever had a package delivered to your home, a pizza, a newspaper or perhaps your mail? What if your mailman went 'postal'? Have you ever filled out an application for anything? Your name and detailed address is everywhere... and you are worried about the members of this forum? Humm...

I think it's both reasons.

Keeping your location a secret sometimes makes it difficult answering questions.

I also think it's funny the way people block their license plates when they post pictures of their cars. Do they block the plates when they drive their cars around town?

I don't care. If you want to find someone it is pretty easy.

I used to question that as well, but it can add to info in Exiff data, etc, and contribute to easily pinpointing the exact location of a person. It's just another facet in identity protection that some choose.

Every time I leave the house, I know the exact location of every single person I see. I wonder if I could sell that info to someone. : )

Right, and conversely, I like seeing pictures of plants and animals from other countries. Many members have posted pictures of their houses, and they seem to be doing okay.

OK. Let me set myself up as a piƱata here.

I live in San Francisco. It is on one side the beautiful, diverse, and civilized city by the bay. In other interpretations it is a morally corrupt liberal culture that represents everything that undermines American family values.

Two different stereo types, but where do I fit on that spectrum, and how would you decide? It is not hard to find out who I am, nor where I live.

I'm not that concerned about physical safety in this regard, but I've recieved my share of cyber abuse simply because of my published location.

Since I have a skin made of kevlar I usually find the responses laughable, but there are people that have very legitimate and well considered reasons for not revealing their location.

The "who, what, where," and why, are questions about the subject matter in the photograph. As to the photographer, the photos and adjacent comments are sufficient to tell us something about the person on the backside of the camera.

I use three different masks (cameras) to "hide" my "who".

The OP stopped responding. Did he have his location listed in his profile?
