Sekonic 478 DR-U and Pocket Wizars FLex 5
Has anyone used this combination of light meter and triggers ?
Before I plunk down my $400 for the meter, I want to make sure that they’ll work wit my set of triggers. Sekonic’s literature say that the meter is compatible with the Plus ll units, but does not specifically, mention Flex 5.
The DR-U is specifically designed for Pocket Wizard, but I just don’t want to assume that they will work with the Flex units...you know what thy say about those who ASSume !
My question is if the Sekonic 478 DR-U meter is compatible with the Flex 5 triggers !
Thanks for trying anyway...
I’m answering your question by referring you to the manual for the Wizard.
You can also Google Sekonic’s website after you learn to spell and write in English.
You can also ***phone*** Sekonic and ask them, but that is probably too complex.
Thanks for not trying.
FYI the web based manuals DO NOT answer the question about the FLEX units, and i’ve Been disconnected from the phone after holding for 30 - 45 minutes TWICE, wise guy ! If you can’t help, because you obviously can’t read, at least have the courtesy to mind your manners, and not be obnoxious.
Yes. I have a Sekonic L-478DR (the DR-U is the latest model) with the built-in PocketWizard module. I have the PocketWizard Mini-TT1, Flex-TT5, Plus III and Plus X units. The Sekonic L-478DR can transmit on both the PocketWizard standard and controlTL channels. In the menu system you select the tab for either the standard or controlTL channels. The PocketWizard Flex-TT5 uses the controlTL channels. The Plus units use the standard channels.

You just want answers
fed to you on a plate, because you are too lazy and ill-educated to find out for yourself.
What a troll!
Wonderful ! That’ s exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the info, and I’m going to head out and pick up a Sekonic today. Thanks again.
You’re wrong you nasty little twerp.
Here's a good way to set up the L-478DR. When you go into the channel setting menu, it will display tabs for both the standard and controlTL channels. If you will be using only controlTL channels (for the Flex-TT5) , you can turn off the standard channels tab.
1) Press the MENU button just below the screen.
2) Scroll down to Radio System Preference (it's quite a few pages down the list)
3) There are three options there:
ControlTL
Standard
ControlTL + Standard
Pick the option that best suits the way you will be using the meter. I mainly use the standard channels because I'm using my Plus III and Plus X units with my studio strobes.
Thanks for your input. My meter should be here on Monday/Tuesday,and although i’ll Probably shoot TTL at times, my real interest is to learn to shoot portraits wit manual setting using both multiple speed lights in combinTion with a monolight. I’ve been strictly a natural light landscape shooter, but i’ve been bitten by the portrait/flash bug, and I can’t seem to shake it !i
I tried it again this afternoon It works great. I had my Nikon speedlight on my Flex-TT5. The Sekonic L-478DR triggered it. You will see in the channel setting menu that zones A, B, and C are available. Highlight the same one as the zone switch on the Flex-TT5.

I have the same meter but use an earlier version of the Pocket Wizards. My best advice, in this situation, is to contact the manufacturer directly. If that fails, as it did in your case, contact B&H. Their staff knows their products well. Good luck on your new adventure. That is a great light meter and trigger. Best of luck.
I have found, through no help from either Pocket Wizard or Sekonic, that the Flex units do work perfectly with the 478 DR-U meter. The information was given to me by making a call to Sekonic’s distributor. My other question was about the 5 degree spot meter whic I believe is included with the 478 DR-U, Sekonic’s website does NOT have that info in the meter’s specifications or online manual. I am assuming that a spot meter is included by an off the cuff mention that I’ve found on YouTube review ! I hope that I’m correct because an optional spot meter accessory is $109 at B&H !
I amazes me that an American company marketing a first class piece of professional gear is so stupid and uncaring as to not provide this information in an easy to find location...It is no wonder that CHINA is beating the crap out of the USA in manufacturing and marketing...PresidentnT Trump is absolutely correct !
And BTW, Don’t fry to get the info from either Pocket Wizard or Sekonic unless you have several hours to dedicate to being left on hold, and disconnected while contacting them on the phone...email is equally useless ,
