Hello there - moving my photos from Aperture to Lightroom Classic and I apparently need an external hard drive. My current photos take up about 284GB so I'm thinking a 1TB external hard drive should do the job. Can you recommend a manufacturer that is of good quality? Thank you, Eileen

Hi there,

You can get a 2TB drive (very small & compact) at Costco for $69 and a 4TB (bit larger not by much) for $89. Both are SeaGate drives - very dependable and outstanding service. Buy two of the 2TB drives and you can pack one when you travel and download your pics when on the move.

I have had good luck with Western Digital My Book. Have had a 1T for several years and just got a 4T for Christmas.

I would get two HDD's and make two copies of your files. They are so cheap at the moment so if one failed, which is very unlikely, all would not be lost.

I purchased a Samsung T3 solid state drive not long ago. It's very highly rated. You can get them with 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB of storage.

I have switched to SSD drives about a year ago. They are fast, slightly more expensive, lighter and do not take any space (other than the USB cable).

Any large drive need backups just as large so going for the big guns (more than 1TB is an issue). 4TB to back-up? Ouch. All the data is concentrated in one space if this goes bad, good luck. (eggs in the same basket kinda thing)

Samsung 1TB SSD (or two 500GB). Not cheap - about $300, but lightning fast (assuming you have a USB3 Port), dead nuts reliable, small (shirt pocket size) and waterproof. If that’s too pricey, then an enterprise class HGST or WD HD (in a fan cooled enclosure). If you choose a cheap $69 hard drive to trust your invaluable data to, then you better buy 2 and mirror them.

A Seagate or Western Digital 1 Tb $90 - 100 both excellent quality for a USB 3 drive.
WD My Book SSD 1 Tb $390, and it is fast. But, how can dead nuts be reliable?

Are you talking internal desktop or external?
I recently installed a 2Tb Western Digital Gold drive in my desktop. Very high MTBF. I think it's a burned in Black drive)
I am partial to Western Digital.

Your point is well taken. No idea the derivation of that old expression. Maybe a southern thing?

Thank you Ron, learn something new every day. Probably where I first heard it. When I was a designer, I used to go to the machine shop regularly and talk to the machinists about what tolerances were actually achievable before specifying them.
