I have the Canon EOS Rebel K2 SLR film camera in my sights. Used, of course. There are a lot of them at both Ebay & Amazon so -- if I go for this one -- I will have to do a lot of research to raise the odds of buying one in good condition.

There are 2 zoom lens options that interest me -- 28-80mm & 28-90mm. both f3.5-5.6 The spec say that the 80 uses a USM motor to drive the autofocus whereas the 90 uses a DC motor (I have no idea what this means.)

ADVICE PLEASE..... 😇
1- was this a really good camera in its day?
2- if so, which of the 2 zoom lenses should I go for?

The Rebel K2 is at the bottom of the Canon SLR line up. It's a decent camera but I can't say it's really good because there many better ones from Canon. As for the lens I think the one with USM is better. If the camera body is less than $50 then I think is OK. I think the $50 is the highest a K2 is worth.

I have the Canon EOS Rebel K2 SLR film camera in m... (show quote)

The K2 was at or near bottom of the line. I think if I were pursuing a Canon film camera, I would set my sights a bit higher - like a an Elan - if I could at all afford it.

For a lens, try for a 24-85 f3.5-4.5 or a 28-90 III version. USM is BETTER !

You don't say why you picked this camera, or what you plan to use it for.

This is an approx 15 year old entry level camera. I bought one around 2003 and still have it, although I have not use it in over 10 years. It's a pretty basic camera with 7AF points and a burst rate of 1.5 FPS! Mine came with the 28-80, which is a decent lens, but by no means exceptional.

One plus is that it accepts EF lenses, so you will be able to use better lenses if you have a digital Canon (or, if you plan to upgrade to a digital SLR in the future, you will be able to use the lenses from this camera.)

Bottom line is I think you can do much better for a bit more money. Have you considered the Canon AE-1?

As near as I can determine, this camera came out around 2004.

Agree. The AE-1 is a classic SLR, but uses FD lenses. This may be good because they are generally cheaper. Down side of FD lenses is that they will not work on a more modern DSLR if you buy one in the future.

Being 15 year old is not a problem for a film camera because something like the newest Nikon F6 is already 14 year old. Actually an older but better camera is the better choice.

True, but for less than $250-300 you could put together 1 hellova SLR system

Is this a 35mm camera?? I was thinking Rebel line started off as APS film.

If you can find one --- Go for an EOS 3

Both the eos3 & the elan are numerously available. The elan is a tad less expensive.

like... if the better one is a 10, what is the other one.. a 9? 6? what?

I have both the EOS 3 & Elan 7 --- The EOS 3 is far superior

Your first choice is whether to buy into the older FD Mount lens manual focus camera system or the newer EOS Mount autofocus lens system film camera. If you choose FD, there are some excellent choices. An F1, a T90, an A1, or an AE1-P are excellent choices and can be had in the $100 range (without a lens). If you choose the EF system, then an EOS 1N can be had for about the same price (I recently bought an as-new EOS 1N for $100). Any of these are a big improvement at only a slightly higher cost than what you are considering.

Yes, the EOS 3 was maybe the best film camera EVER - and, still expensive today ! ( for a film camera)

If we say the EOS 3 is a 10, the Elan is maybe an 8....? !

I think you will see a LARGE difference in price between the two ( relatively).
