All set to buy Fuji XT 20 but then I saw the Canon 100-400..........

Hi, I needed a mirrorless lightweight camera for hiking and I was all set to get the Fuji XT 20. Then I saw some photos from the new Canon 100-400 lens and I was hooked! I have a 70D and I might get the 80D. But I really need a light camera! I photograph animals in the wild and in their natural habitat and may go on a trip to India soon and I would love to take the 100-400 lens for wild life, but have to sacrifice the Fuji. Can't do both! So I need some help to decide what to do. Thanks in advance.

Mickey, for me personally, I don't mind the extra weight because I know I am going to get the most awesome photos. I have a 4 lb. telephoto that I carry around a lot and have found ways to carry it that does not fatigue me. One way to look at it is that by carrying around the extra weight, you are getting your workout for the day. See? There's always a silver lining! lol

I just purchased an EOS 77D which has a considerably smaller body than the 70D and 80D. I'm really pleased with the size and feel of the camera. Features are advanced compared to the 70D. The 80D does have a better viewfinder, but I find that the viewfinder in the 77D works for me. You'll sacrifice the 7 frames per second for 6 in the 77D, but that's not an issue for me. It is almost as small as some of the mirrorless bodies, and has the new Digic 7 processor from Canon. Priced less than the 80D. You might want to check it out.

The 100-400L II is one of my favorite lenses and it works great with the Canon 1.4 teleconverter. I've used it on my 70D, 80D, 7DII and even 5DSr and D5IV with excellent results. You can't go wrong with an 80D and to save money, consider a Canon factory refurbished unit. I did and saved several hundred dollars and the camera was like new.

The Canon 70D or 80D with the 100-400 lens attached is NOT a lightweight camera for hiking.

Had the same problem with weight- especially the 100-400 on a 6D. Took the plunge and changed over to Olympus OM D eM1 (very tedious menu but slowly getting to grips) plus a few lenses including the 40-150 pro and 1.4 extender giving the equivalent of max 420 mm on a FF. Will save up for the 300mm pro which works with the 1.4 extender too and would give the equivalent of 840mm on FF. OK I know these lenses are the heaviest on MFT but still a lot lighter then Canon equivalents.

I faced a similar dilemma when the 100-400 II was announced. I decided in favor of that lens & the 1.4 converter, largely because of interest in wildlife. I've learned to live rather easily with the weight, and I'm very, very happy with the lens quality (image IQ).

I have both the Canon 80D and (recently purchased) Fuji X-T1. Love them both. Forget about the weight issue. That’s way overplayed. As far as the lense goes Fugi has a 100-400mm XF lens that is just as good as Canon’s L lens and less expensive. Have fun making the decision.

I use the 100-400 IS II on my 80D ... and the reach, focus & image quality is amazing.

That set-up is hardly hiking friendly. Maybe splurge and buy a "travel" camera such as a Sony RX100 series or a Fuji X100 series. Either will provide excellent IQ and are wonderfully small and light.

If you want a lighter camera and any Canon lens, such as their 100-400, one of their new MILCs, such as the M5, is the way to go. The have an adapter that maintains all functionality of the lens.

I am curious. When you say "all functionality" are there no exceptions? Everything works just as it does on the DSLR?

AF happens

Aperture control happens

If you want something light and not bothered about images of birds in flight try this: buy a second hand Olympus EM1 from a reputable camera shop and add a PanaLeica 100 - 400mm f4/6.3 lens. I used to own said system and it worked beautifully, with excellent IQ and an FF equivalent of 200 - 800mm. The image quality was mostly indistinguishable from my Nikon D500 APS-C camera. There should be a few excellent EM1 bodies about because many people (me included) exchanged them for EM1 mark II bodies.
