A fair composition, but the light is not balanced, coming from the left, so the photograph is overexposed on the left-hand side. The use of a reflector placed to the right would reflect light back into the image. For desert/bright sunlight conditions you may wish to consider a Neutral Density Filter, say an ND8

Check your rule of thirds. A little over exposed, a flash on the right would have taken out the shadows but you can fix most of this in photoshop. Nice contrast of colours and textures and juxtaposition of life and hard rock.

First, everything I say is purely opinion. What appeals to me might not appeal to someone else.

Anyway, I really like your subject, I like the juxtaposition of barren rock against green life, and the green/red colors really cause each other to pop.

It would be nice to see more separation between the rock and the pine. The texture of the rock is very busy, so is the texture of the pine tree. The two matched up with each other, both equally in focus make the photo look a little busy. A wider aperture could help some, although the tree is quite close to the rock so it may not help all that much depending on the lens you're using.

I would recommend using some post processing (I use GIMP) to 'fake' more separation, like the example I attached.

I blurred the background to make the texture of the rock compete less with the tree, and make the photo look more three dimensional. I also evened out the exposure from the left side to the right side of the photo, and cropped it to make the composition a little less static. I adjusted the color a bit to emphasis the green against the red.

Oh, I LOVE that shadow too... and I think with some additional post processing this could make an interesting Ansel Adams style black and white photo.

Good eye on finding this subject!

I really like it just the way it is! I love the contrast in colors and subject (tree/rock) (live/inanimate), etc. Well done!

looks like a drive by or walk by shot to me.

I don't see much effort going into the shot

I don't know what the subject is supposed to be is it the light? texture?
color?

Personally, I'd trash it and go on

what color are you big boy pants?

I'm with docrob....seeing the green against the orange was a good catch but you didn't exploit the two colors and textures....

I might have gotten very close and gotten just one green "frond" against the rock or just the green pattern against the rock but what you've got isn't compelling.

I have softened the photo slightly using 'Shadows/Highlights'! What do you think?

Just my opinion but:

1 the white rocks in the lower left corner are to bright and distracting.

2 the overall exposure is a little light. I tend to like my images a little darker.

3 i think your main point of interest in the photo is the shadow. Try a vertical crop with that as the main subject.

Again, just my opinion.
