I purchased a refurbished D750 and now looking for a good carry lens to get started with. I like to take pictures of landscapes, my vacation rental home, my horses and sometimes the critters and birds around my house. Is this a good lens to get me started in FX lenses?

I'll be looking into more FX lenses for specific use, but for now, just want one for general use to get me started!

Thanks to many of you sharing info about books, I purchased Darrell Young, Mastering the Nikon D750 and Bryan Peterson, Understanding Exposure.

Going thru the camera now and getting it set up!

That lens should be OK for you - Tamron also makes this focal range - FWIW ......

Thanks Imagemeister, any advantage one over the other in your experience?

The one obvious advantage is cost of the Tamron - there may be a weight advantage also for the Tamron - Google is your friend - there are probably more than one comparison on the net somewhere ....

It's an awful lens. It has horrible focus breathing, which at it's nearest focus distance when zoomed to 300mm it only provides a field of view equal to a 135mm lens. Corners and edges are typically pretty soft, lots of chromatic aberration, strong illumination loss from center to edges, and overall soft results beyond 150mm.

Even though I have personally tried three different copies of this lens, you shouldn't take my word for it - check out this review.

You would do better to get a 24-120 F4, and if you need something longer, get a 300mmF4 or a 150-600 Tamron G2.

It's a good lens (I have one). But it's BIG, and a tad heavy. You mentioned "a getting started: lens. I would recommend the now discontinued (but still around on Ebay) Nikkor AF 28-200mm f3.5-5.6 G. Read all about it here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/28200g.htm. Not nearly the reach of the 300, but much easier to handle and sharp-as-hell.

Cameraf4,

yeah, the camera will be a learning curve for me and I thought a "getting started" lens would be better. I could be saving for something else later on. I'll read the link, I like reading Ken Rockwell's reviews.

I thought about getting a 50mm to use until I get it figured out, but, I will surely look at the 28-200.

The Nikon 24-85 VR is a best buy IMHO. Excellent image quality and a useful range of zoom. Less total zoom range yields higher quality. It is on my D800 80% of the time.

Actually, considering that it gets you out to 300mm it's not that big or heavy. It's also a very good lens. I was just looking at some photos that I took with mine and my D7000. I happened to post some photos to Photo Gallery the other day. I was very pleased when I pulled up the download and then magnified a particular spot how nicely it blew up. On other photos I've been able to crop very severely and still get a sharp photo. It's a very good all-around lens. I won't say there aren't sharper and better lenses for more particular work, but if you want to get good pictures on vacation or when traveling, and have one lens to cover wide angle as well as telephoto, this is a very nice lens. It's been a good seller for a long time.

That lens is always on my D750. If I want something else, I'll change lenses, but the 28-300mm is a a good all-around lens.

At 4.4 lbs, it is amazingly hand-holdable, has excellent image quality and shows just how bad the 28-300 really is at 300mm.

I have a friend that borrowed my Sigma 150-600 Sport, which weighs 6.3 lbs, and shot for several hours with it hand held on her D800. Got some great shots of a snowy owl in flight. She is 5' tall and about 110 lbs, and 60 yrs old. On my advice, she just purchased the Tamron G2 and couldn't be happier. it weighs nearly 2 lbs less.

I am assuming you want opinions on the Nikon 28-300. I have that lens and it is great however it does have some bulk and I would strongly suggest you go to a camera store and try it out like you would a pair of shoes. Some think it too heavy for a walk around lens, my personal favorite is the 24-120.

If you do not NEED the zoom range of a lens that goes out to 300mm I’d look at a 24-70mm f/2.8 for exceptional image quality. The do-it-all lenses do not do anything well. JMHO.
