I don't know if a new lens is an option, but if it is I would recommend the Nikon 28-300. The lens is acceptably sharp throughout the range and it has the benefit of being able to close focus in all focal lengths down to around 9". Can you imagine shooting a flower at 300 mm from 9" away? This lens not only takes the place of a wide angle and a telephoto, but stands in nicely for a macro lens!
