Hello fellow UHH members. I had a Nikon 24-70 F/2.8 VR Lens that I purchased to use on my D610 Camera and sold it because it was too heavy to carry around. I am now looking at the 24-120 F/4 lens as a replacement. I am aware that the 24-120 is not as fast as the 24-70; I am thinking that I could increase the ASA to fill in some of the void in regards to light. Any opinion suggestions is appreciated. I am going overseas to Europe in a couple of months. Many thanks in advance

The 24-120 f4 is not a light weight lens either. approx 1/2lb diff.
I am told that it is 1lb less in weight which would make it manageable

It is also not as sharp. But it may not make that much of a difference on a D610.

24-70 VR is 2.4 lbs, so the 24-120 is considerably lighter.
The 24-120 is not as sharp but it's a pretty decent performer for the money.
I use mine more than anything and have the 24-70vr as well.
Another option to consider is the
Sigma 24-105 at 2lbs.
A bit lighter than than the Nikon 24-70 but longer.
If I had to buy all over again (with university money) I would include the Sigma as a possible candidate.

Besides the weight difference the 24-120 is smaller and has 50 mm more reach. Now nobody here will try to say that the 24-70 vr 2.8 isn’t a great lens and it will be sharper than the 24-120, but for traveling around with one lens, the smaller lighter lens might be a better choice.
Thanks Gene51; Manglesphoto; Goofynewfie; and Trustforce. Trustforce your idea is what I gaining my attention because I don't want to be switching lens. Moreover, I am also thinking about the weight.
I wonder how sharp a contrast is the 24-70 compared to the 24-120. Cost aside I might consider that path

I have been very satisfied with the results I got with mine on my old D610. I just upgraded to a D750 and have not been able to fully put it through it’s paces due to cold New England weather. For me it was about the range. The 24-120 f/4 meets my needs very well. I am a hobbyist, not a super serious amateur.

By the way, I think it is a great travel lens. I have taken it alone on many of my trips to Florida.
just a few examples of some photos I took yesterday with the 24-120 on my D5100. The lens focus is quick and accurate, and there is nice bokeh. Can't wait to try it on my new camera body.
