Is there a Nikon Macro lens that is the BEST?
They are all the 'Best' in their respective focal lengths.

Peter, I use the 105 and 200 Nikon which calls it Micro. Each one has it's purpose.I started with the 105 and when I got into photographing bee's I wanted to be a little further away.

That's an interesting question that I've never heard before. All good macro lenses have a 1:1 magnification. There are shorter version macro lenses to longer ones. You have the choice of selecting what length of lens is best to your comfort level. My friend has a Tamron 90mm f2.8 macro 1:1 magnification for Nikon Mount. Some are 100mm - 105mm. And maybe even longer. I'm not familiar with anything longer than 105mm for macro. The Nikon's 105mm is probably Nikon's most renowned micro/macro lens.
Nikon also has a 60mm and a 200mm
I have a Nikon F AF Micro-Nikkor 105mm f2.8 D lens for sale if interested..
Lemme know,

I have the ancient 55mm Ai micro f3.5, the 60mm micro AF, the 105mm micro f4, & the 200mm micro f4. All are manual focus only except the 60 but I never use the AF on it. The only one I have to be carful with is the 200. It's well known for CA issues if not used correctly. My favorite is the 105 for sure. I have read the new version of the 200 is improved for the CA issue but I don't own one so can't say from experience. The two shorter versions are much harder to work with because of the need to get so close to the subject unwanted shadows are very hard to control in natural light. If you're really not doing true macro but closeups instead I have found a Nikkor 300mm off a tripod great for larger flowers and the like. I would not insist on AF because you'll end up adjusting most likely anyway. At least that's been my experience. Good luck.

Unaware of its existence, I checked the Nikon website on the 200mm micro/macro. Almost $1800 brand new. It's a very impressive looking lens. And perhaps, it can be used for other than just macro. Like portraits?

You might want to join the UHH macro section....
I have the Nikon 105mm f2.8. I use it for stationary subjects, such as flowers, prints, etc. Beautiful lens. I have also Nikon 200mm f4. It is a great lens when you need to be far away from your subject, such as dragon flies, etc. I love both lenses.
I have the Nikon 105mm which is an excellent lens. However, lately I've been shooting insects from further away with my Nikon 28-300 zoom. I've gotten very good results and solved some of the depth of field problems.
If you are into portraits, you can't beat the Nikon 85mm f1.8g.
