I would like to get some feedback on the sharpness of these photos... this one and freight below...
Single focus point just one click below dead center...

Taking into consideration that the engine is moving (and shaking) that is pretty darn sharp.

The NCDOT passenger train is doing about 65 and the freight probably about 50. The shots are handheld, hence the high shutter speed and higher ISO.

It is difficult to make a judgement on sharpness when the object in focus is moving; sharpness is independent of motion blur.

Moving train, telephoto lens, hand held... it all looks good to me. Maybe a little atmospheric haze in play?

Your images look about as sharp as UHH rendering can do. Pictures os a moving train are about the worst subject for judging the sharpness of your camera or lens. Even the ground vibrates when they go by!

I would say the freight train may be a little more impacted by the sun angle creating the hazy image. I could dehire some in Lightroom. But I didn't want to do much edits to these prior to posting. A polarizer may have helped but I didn't have one with me. Thanks for your opinion.

Best,
Todd

You should come shoot drag racing trackside with me sometime...!!! I attached the originals so people can download for a closer look if they want. Thanks for your opinion.

Todd

Well, it 's certainly not as pin sharp as that lens is capable of, but it seems a very reasonable result of shooting a moving train handheld with a 2x Extender II. I believe using that lens with an 2x Extender III would be sharper in the middle.
