I have an entire folder of photos that come up as normal thumbnails when I try to access them in bridge, but I'm unable to open any of them for editing or printing in any program. In photoshop, when attempting to open in edit mode, I get the message "Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found". In other programs I get nothing at all when I attempt to load them. In photoshop the file properties identify them as JPEG files, but there is no metadata given. Are these photos simply lost forever, or is there something I might try to salvage them. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is the extension jpg, jpl, or something. Try moving and renaming ine or two files and see if you can open them. They may be JPEG2000 files.
You may want to check the file extension. Right click and click properties (windows) Right click, click Get Info (Mac) change the existing extension to .jpg. You can always change it back if need be. Then try to open it.
Yes, that's one of the first things I tried. Existing extension on all files is already .JPEG, but I changed the preceding ID and added.JPEG, but still won't open.
Where did they come from?
Taken with Canon 20D - probably 150 photos from Africa in 2005. Other than moving them once in Photoshop Elements I have no idea what could have corrupted the files or how to undo the problem.

Should not be XXXX.JPEG. Change to xxxx.jpg.

I agree, change it to JPG...
Yup, did that also with no success. This really has me stumped.
Was never aware you could simply change a file extension???
Thought it could be changed via a save as or save, once opened??
When I try to access these photos in my Canon software (Digital Photo Professional) I get blank squares - not even the thumbnails that I get in photoshop.
Tried sending you one, but it won't show up in the Choose file box.
