I was recently asked to photograph pets for a fundraiser. My effort as an amateur was strictly a gift of my time and what little I know about photography and editing. From my standpoint, it was an opportunity to enhance my skills as I was pushed out of my comfort zone, forcing me to learn some new techniques. Hooray for YouTube tutorials! There is still much to learn, but I must say I had a blast.
Suggestions for improvement are always welcome. There will be another opportunity for more shots (and new subjects) in two weeks. I can't wait.
Lovely shots. #3 has that doggie tilt of the head which says, "what are you doing hooman?" But the one I like most is the shot of the girl with her dog and cat. It shows somebody with their pets and is more evocative of the relationship. Plus the Cat has that "I'm outta here," stretch that all Cat parents will recognize.
I've got nothing for you Vicki. These are amazing.

Excellent work. I loved all nine of your photos posted. But, I especially loved photo #1..That is one serious look. I knew a photographer, who took photo portraits of dogs at dog shows. He said the worse thing you could do, is to chop off the dogs ears in close ups. Especially, if the dogs ears are straight up.
I think you did a fantastic job, the detail and lighting is right on and all your buddies are fully engaged. Nice work!

Absolutely beautiful Vicki! I wish I lived near you so you could take my black dogs photo with a black background!
Nicely done. Dogs can be challenging. Your lighting is really good.

I think you did a great job Vicki! No. 3 is my favorite, with that tilted head and inquisitive look.
How could anybody not like these superb portraits of some cute furry pets.

Fabulous. You captured their personalities.
Beautiful shots that show the personality of each animal.

Thanks for taking time for this post rgrenaderphoto. I got several shots of #3 plus some with a couple of kids, the owner's children or grandchildren. The tilted head appealed to me the most, but I suspect she'll print the shot with the kids. I hadn't intended to use people in any shots. When the girl with the cat showed up, I realized she would need to be included to control the cat. I shot with crops to exclude her, but realized there was a connection that was important to the photos, and ended up doing a number of shots with her in them. The dog was included, too, but I also got some without her. BTW the girl has come through a significant battle with brain cancer, so it was particularly important to try to show her bond with her pets.
