ALL of the above - - BUT - - you MUST set up your shot before hand (recommend a high ISO and fast /f stop) shoot jpg+RAW AND shoot in a 5-shot auto-BRACKET +1ev AND then clean up the jpg from RAW, then process in Post with Photomatix, Nix HDR, or Photoshop.

Thank you. I have not used bracketing so I will have to practice that.

Problem is, when I've taken a boat trip like that, things don't happen quite as I expect, so no matter much I try to "set up in advance", I'm still moving around at the end to get the shot I thought I was set up for.

Many Great Photos were "Lucky" (certainly SOME were planned). But I've found Luck favors those who are prepared.
Even so - - the BEST can be prepared, and STILL Miss the Shot. Lady Luck is like that.

I’m sure this has been discussed before but I couldn’t find it. Thanks in advance for any help. We leaving next Sunday for a cruise from Port Liberty in NJ. Coming back in early morning probably before dawn. I hear there are great photo ops coming under the Verrazano Bridge. I have not been successful at night photography but I don’t want to miss this opportunity. Can anyone suggest settings that will work to get the bridge lights and maybe the Statue of Liberty without using a tripod. My lens does have vr so that will help. Shooting with Nikon 7200 with 18-200 lens or 50 mm 1.4.
Thank you

In addition to the fast lens and high ISO, if you have a small tabletop type tripod with a small ball head, mount the camera, splay the legs and put the tripod legs against your chest. That adds more support than hand-holding alone, plus no vibration problems.

Thanks...I never thought of that.

Also, this Christmas I used a fast lens (50mm f1.8) and a high ISO (1600) to take pictures of Christmas lights. Instead of evaluative metering (which often works well) I tried using spot metering on the lights themselves. I got mostly well exposed and sharp images hand-held. I didn't use the table top tripod idea because I didn't think of it. I wish now that I had. Anyway, good luck!

Well after studying all your replies and practicing the early morning shots here's what happened. We were we would approach the bridge around 6 am. I set my alarm for 5:30 but woke up at 4:52 and saw the bridge just ahead. I grabbed my camera (which fortunately I had set up the night before) ran out on the balcony and grabbed these first two shots. One immediately before and just after we passed under it. Not perfect but under the circumstances I was glad I got any at all. The pictures of the city I was able to get from the deck.
Exe for first two is: iso 600, f/3.5, 1/20th sec
Exe for last two: 25600, f/8, 1/80th

Welcome back. I hope you didn't sail up the river with a -0 wind chill.

Not bad for trying to shoot from a boat at night.
