It DOES NOT appear that CNET is charging for post processor downloads as a recent thread suggests

A recent thread, (http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-508728-1.html), has stated categorically that CNET is now charging $30 per month via a download app called WinTonic for what used to be completely free downloads. I have researched this assertion and have not found any evidence of it. In fact CNET has clearly defined which apps are free downloads, which don't include premium features and which are free to try. The author of that thread appears to be unintentionally passing misinformation, probably as a result of his usual insufficient attention to detail. Win Tonic appears to be a third party malware and internet security app. Since I am banned from this person's threads I'm posting this to call attention to his topic and the confusion it might cause. If anyone finds evidence that CNET is now charging a $30 fixed fee every month for downloads I will be happy to apologize to the author of that thread.

He can't download a file that big over his dial-up connection ... It doesn't matter if the software is free or not ....

I wasn't worried about him but the confusion this might cause to others. Since I can't respond directly in his threads I chose this approach.

I was very careful not to mention the name of the author of the thread in question so I wouldn't be accused of bullying anyone.

If you post the OPs link.....its about the same. And this is not bullying....its getting things straight and INFORMING people with the right stuff. This is what a forum should do. Not nurturing these type of people.

Yep, I know. But I'm being a bit cautious because I expect I'll be doing this often when he passes on misinformation, and I'm trying to avoid being accused of plotting a vendetta against him. Referencing his name regularly might give some that impression.

LOL You can't. He's oblivious and in his own little world. But I don't want this thread to turn into an anti Chris thread. My only intention was to correct the misinformation he passed as fact.

Correcting misinformation is never a bad thing unless it spawns more misinformation. It's just like antibodies fighting an infection.

Chris is always ready to jump to conclusions, like Cnet is taking over programs, instead of doing a little research. That's why he spews so much garbage. He claims that C-net is using this to charge, when the problem is on his computer.

Win Tonic Removal Guide

Rogue programs were made to deceive computer users. In the case of Win Tonic, this malware will produce various fake findings on the computer to force users into purchasing the full version of the software.

What I believe happened is that Chris, who is not very computer savvy or detail oriented, was looking at downloads in CNET and thought the Win Tonic 3rd party advertising link was part of the downloading process. When he selected it, WinTonic, which is a commercial software package and not freeware, wanted to charge him for the download. He unfortunately has a history of jumping to conclusions based on insufficient data.

Too bad he knows everything already and blocks everyone that might pierce that bubble ...
