Lots of huge waves yesterday on the Oregon Coast, these were just a few. At least one person did not stay back of fence in Depoe Bay and is still missing.

I grew up on the Oregon coast. Every year a few people are washed out to sea because they don't believe the signs the State posts. Now another one yesterday. The newspaper reported some of the waves were 60ft high. It's dangerous beauty that deserves respect. Too bad for some family.

Just out of curiosity, why shoot in black and white?

My guess would be there isn't enough color in the background. It would be enough to distract and tone down the photo, making it dull. In B&W the contrast is heightened, adding impact.

I shot in color, but there wasn't any to speak of. Joe Blow said it exactly right. I definitely keep more pictures in color by far, but it seems in the winter storms at the coast I go with B&W.

Thanks for looking and commenting.

This is why folks should be careful here. Shot yesterday by a friend.

Very nicely done. I was there and fought with spray and rain, didn't get anything worthwhile. Your PP is great. We got there just before the fire trucks arrived. The guy had gone over the sea wall and was down looking into the chasm where the geiser was blowing up from. Then he was gone, reportedly down into the chasm. Still hasn't been recovered.

Great shot. This is at Shore Acres out on Cape Arago, a favorite place for big wave shots. We were down there at Christmas for their lights display. The tide was out and the rock formations between this viewpoint and the breaking waves are unique. The rocks are eroded full of holes, some look like globes, some like turtles and grotesque snakes. Had a great time wandering around there and shooting in the evening light, deep shadows and highlights, very mysterious place indeed.

Thanks GVarner! I missed the best wave, I turned my back while being inundated, and did not get another chance
