Stay right with WD. Though you might consider buying your own Housings and buy full sized "enterprise" HDDs for the housing. Especially if you can find housings with fans. I'd suggest using a pair of external HDDs for archiving or back-up.

Not saying WD is bad, but I just had one go bad on me that was less than a year old. All though when I bought it I bought two so I started using the second WD that I bought. It sounds like WD is still the most used.
I've used Seagate too, I guess any of them can go bad. That's why I'm getting another one and have three external HD.

I prefer to buy large internal drives of my choice and put them into an enclosure. WE Black are good, but I'm now using HGST Ultrastar drives. They're "enterprise," rated for 24/7 service. When you buy a pre-packaged external drive, you don't know what's inside the case. A few years ago, I contacted WD and asked them what was inside one of their cases. It was a Black, so I bought it. Now, they don't tell you.

I bought a couple of housings with fans, but they were ineffective, except at making a little noise. With extensive use, I'd watch the temperature rise a bit and turn on the fan. The temperature kept rising. I made my own wooden enclosure with two drives and a larger fan.

I purchased a Buffalo 2TB thunderbolt drive in 2012 as a portable drive for my MacBook Pro. After it filled up I bought a western digital 2TB usb 3 drive and am very disappointed (extremely slow) so I switched the drives. Using the wd drive as a back up and cleared the Buffalo drive and using as the main travel drive again.

I've had issues with Seagate drives to the point that I will NOT purchase them anymore. I ONLY use WD both portable/usb and internal. I even have a WD Cloud Chassis that uses internal drives and creates an internet cloud for me to use. My computer originally came with a Seagate 300meg drive and it has been replaced with a 1tb WD. All of my other drives on this computer are 4tb or larger WD drives. I've only had one WD drive failure (was in my WD Cloud and they immediately replaced it). I've had several Toshiba, Seagate, and other brand failures. My point is that I have about 20 WD drives and only one failure and none of the other drive failure rates comes close to a 1 in 20 rate... usually its 1 in 2 or 3 of 5.

I have a OWC 5 bay 12 TB RAID system for backup to my iMac. I also have a G-Technologies RAID that I outgrew.

The WD doesn't say it's formatted for Windows 10. That seems something of a drawback on its usefulness.

My personal preference for backup use is Synology NAS servers. The best in the business, IMHO. Can be accessed by most of the devices in my home. Best of luck.
