My bad. I’ll shut up now. Though I would still be interested as to why MT Shooter doesn’t recommend it on the D8xx series cameras.

I am off today so I am on my phone but I will attemp to explain. The 28-300 was my FAVORITE lens on my D7000 DX body because of its versatility and clarity. However the lens is well documented as having much distortion in the outer lens area. I ignored that info as I was not using that part of the glass. When I bought the new 36MP D800E I was anxious to use my favorite lens on it and found it close to unuseable due to the distortion issues. I shelved it for a couple years.
When I got a new 24MP D750 I broke it out again and found the issues were nowhere near as bad on that sensor. Would I ever try it on my new 45MP D850? Definitely not, even if I still had it. I sold it to a D610 user about 2 years ago and she just loves it.
Higher resolution sensors demand the best quality glass in front of them, they will definitely show any defects or deficiencies in any lens you mount on them!
I hope this helps understand the issue.

One other thing is the results you will get on a DX camera will not be the same as you get on an FX camera because you are only using the cropped portion of the lens on a DX camera which typically will be the best. It is usually the outer edges of the full frame lenses on an FX Camera that create the distortion or lack of sharpness.

That makes sense. But I have the D600 which is identical to the d610 sensor and I am not at all happy when I compare it to my other lenses. I am starting to feel like I got a bad lens.

You still have not answered the question as to whether you bought it new or used. It makes a huge difference.

I was not replying to anyone in particular. My post came at the same time you posted yours which is basically saying the same thing.

This is a handheld shot taken with a 28-300 on a D800. I would have preferred a faster lense, no question. But with walking for 8-10 miles a day like we did in China, this was enough of a load.

I purchased a 28~200 a few years ago. It was bad. I sent it back. The next one also had problems. The third one still works. I do not know what was going then with that lens and nikon control but I was not a happy camper.

Yours being used (first post), is a different story. Try to send it back, if you can.

By the way, when you purchase something on line from e-bay or any any individual, ask for the serial number before it is shipped to you the reasons?
- You cannot be accused of doing the old swticharoo
- You can verify if this is a stolen lens. (If it has been reported as stolen, there is a registry)
- You may find out that then is still under warranty!!!!

I have the 28-300 in both Canon and Nikon. Although the Nikkor 28-300 is technically not in the same class as the Canon 28-300, I got the Nikkor lens because I use the Canon lens quite often and I like the focal length.
I am very happy with my Nikkor 28-300. There are times I don't feel like lugging the Canon around all day; it is fairly large and somewhat heavy. On those occasions I use one of my Nikon bodies with the 28-300 attached; it's a great combination.

I've been using mine on my D800e for over a year now with exceptionally satisfying results.

But if you bought it used I think you bought someone elses problem!
Its a good lens on your 24MP body and should be giving you better results. Don't use it on the D800's or the D850 though.

Really? That's news to me and my 28~300.

The 28-300 is a DX lens. Put it on an FX camera like the D810 and the camera automatically goes into a DX crop mode.

My apologies, MT Shooter. On re-read, 1 — I was wrong on the lens format (mine is an 18-300), and 2 - that response sounds incredibly rude — I had intended a friendly jibe, but most certainly missed the mark.

How was I rude just stating a fact?

Am doing some traveling this year so purchased a slightly used Nikon 28-300mm as a one lens solution to use on my D600. I had borrowed a friends last year and it seemed like a pretty decent lens overall, but this one is very disappointing. Anything hand held over 200mm is not clear and also has bad vignetteing at wider angles. It doesn’t get the greatest reviews but this one is pretty bad. Could it be this particular lens is “bad” or could my friend just happen to have a very “good” one. I got a pretty good deal on it but am ready to sell it and go back to plan A...mount my Nikon 16-35mm which is awesome for landscapes and carry my little Nikon 50mm 1.8 which I also love for when I need to travel light or in places like museums or street photos. Comments or suggestions please.

I've had the same complaint ever since I tried one 4 yrs ago. Your experience with the one you purchased is similar to my experience with three copies I have used on my cameras. The only really good place for that lens is on a DX camera, where the edge and corner performance is not an issue. It does have good center image quality, even at 300mm. I absolutely hate it on FX, and now that I shoot D800/D810 it's even worse. It was soft of ok on a 12mp D700, but still not very sharp.

I have the identical lens and have no problems with sharpness at the long range. Are you using a lens hood? The vignetting at the 28 mm end could be the lens hood encroaching into the image.
