In a week, I will be leaving for a trip to southern India and visiting the following cities: Chennai, Mahabalipuram, Pondicherry, Tricky, Madurai, Munnar, Kumarakom, Cochin, Aurangabad and Mumbai. We have a detailed tour laid out to visit the most interesting and photogenic places at each destination. However, I am sure a few of the hogs have visited some places off the beaten path that might be fun to shoot. Would appreciate any suggestions for shooting locations or favorite stops.

In Mumbai the worlds largest outdoor laundry is awesome for photography. I just photographed it a couple of months ago. I would recommend that you get someone to take you there. Amish at Mumbai Moments can arrange for you get in. Worth every minute.

The zoo at Mysore is wonderful and the Jaganmohan Palace in the same city is worth seeing. Wish I were with you. Enjoy all the food.

The caves at Ellora and Ajanta are among the world's greatest sites. Ellora is only 30km from Aurangabad and Ajanta is about 100 km. In my opinion, these are far more interesting than anything in Aurangabad. I was able to take good photos in both sets of caves with only the guide's flashlight but you need a very fast lens (no flash is permitted).

Lucky you, I’ll follow this one with interest. Perhaps hire a photographer guide. Go to a game park. The sites will be incredibly beautiful. People shots are amazing. Enjoy this trip of a life time.

The laundry is on our list to visit. We visited a small laundry in New Delhi on our recent trip to northern India and it was very interesting so we are looking forward to Mumbai.

We spent 3 weeks in northern India last January and decided we wanted to return to see the south. This was one of the best trips we have ever taken and are hoping the south will be as photogenic and interesting. Not so interested in the wildlife. People and the culture will be our primary focus. I'll be sure to post photos on our return. However, I took 3,500 pics on the last trip and it will be several months before I edit and process my photos. Thank you for your good wishes.

there are lots of interesting places in souther India with eye catching images and photographers dream . do not forget to go to Mahabalpuram and take pictures of the stone carved mini temples and sculptures.Kancheepuram,Kumbakonam.Madurai,Kancheepurmam are great for fascinating Hindu temple photographs (make sure you follow the local rules and take prior permission to take photos.hill stations like Ooty,Erkard,Kodaikanal are great for landscape photographs.if you have time ,visit Kanyakumari(previously called cape Kamarin) which is the tip of India where the three great oceans(Arabic sea,Indian ocean and Bay of Bengal meet with the temple of Swami vivekananda and his statue build on the rock in the middle of the ocean. do not for get to take the picture of men&women with their colorful and beautiful customs(please get their permission and most of them are gracious and they will let you take their pictures. if you still have time go and visit Brindavan garden in Mysore.Karnataka state which is a archeological wonder.do not forget to taste the local delicious south indian food ,you will love it, good luck!

We have a very detailed tour arranged with driver and guide the whole way. We will be visiting almost all of the places you mentioned in the beginning of your post. Unfortunately, we will not have time for the southern most tip or Mysore. You are right about the people. We did 3 weeks in northern India last January and my photos of the people were wonderful. I have to leave my office in a few moments but I will share my favorite with you later.

If you're into wildlife photography, Rajiv Ghandi Nat'l Park is great for safari. I've stayed at the Kabini Resort twice. Saw lots of animals and birds (gaur, elephants, boar, harpy eagle, crocs, giant fruit bats, snakes and so much more. Jeep and boat safaris are available.that is considerably south of Mysore on the border of Karnataka and Tamilnadu.

There are lots of ancient temples in the south too.

Hampi, near Hospet-- East of Goa. 14th century Hindi ruins and temples. While being guided through the temple by a sadhu priest in '73, he took us way up into the top and showed us a camera obscura--made of the stone structure of the building! An upside-down image of the temple square was projected onto the wall! He then took us downstairs and opened a pair of big wooden doors to reveal a tables-long banquet of bread and fruit and all kinds of other stuff. We thought we were being invited in for dinner, but a moment later the doors opposite us across the temple opened and about 10 gazillion large monkeys came charging in and tore the place apart! It was a food fight from hell. . . Apparently the monkey god, Hanuman is quite popular there. . .we backed slowly away so as not to get there attention. . .

Unfortunately we will not be close enough to Hempi for a visit. Sounds fascinating. Thanks for the suggestion.
