Just to be clear and honest, the OP's opening sentence was in quotes "For me a photograph is an image that captures a moment in time."

It was MY observation that by that definition I have known the pen and ink artists that would qualify as photographers making that opening definition as absurd as it was. You cannot define photography, or much else with such a simplistic approach. Especially when photography is so many things to so many different people.

I believe that a photograph or any art execution should have some emotion attached to it. I taped up 50 photos in my office some over processed some bw mostly graphic
no kids or people. Was thinking of trying to sell small collections online. A couple of people walked in and their reactions was very enlightening. A friend came over we so some
business together. And he said WOW. He really liked the graphic bw shots but the whole collection productivity really entertained him. A lady helping my wife straighten the house
she has back problems liked the b&w's. She wasn't even interested in the Taj Mahal but focused on a shot that is one of my favorites. A table top in Italy.
Now you might say I started with a photograph should have emotion. I think all photos have an emotional message. Not sure why but I feel the image.
This is the favorite. No idea why.

My thought is it has an attraction beyond the abstract because it resembles a closeup of a human eye. Human vision is hard wired to respond to eyes.

Lots of good responses to this thread overnight.

For me a photograph is an image that captures a moment in time. It’s that simple I go out with my Minolta SRT 201 take a perfectly exposed photo ( I only shoot B&W film) and I’m done. I don’t have to come home and waste time fabricating an image that was not there in the first place with hardware and software. If you have a digital camera you are always tweaking something in your image. I get it that you want to swap colors, change an image to sepia, soften the focus, have starry lights and all the other games you play with an image. When will a digital camera be made that we won’t ever have to do anything to the image? You expose the scene correctly take the photo and you’re done. You’ve captured the moment perfectly! (And yes I have had digital slrs and computers, software, scanners, printers etc... )
