Mental lapse. Don't know what I'm talking about. Sorry
What camera are you talking about? The Nikon 1 series of cameras have been out for a few years and they cost a lot more than $500 new.
I'm pretty happy with my point and shoot. Though, I really haven't taken it out yet. Just been too busy with other photo projects. Those are pretty much finished so testing is nigh.

Nikon's new mirrorless cameras look like they are out to grab market share. At $500 they are going to give the point and shoot crowd a run for their money. I'm not sure what their lenses will look like in action, with 2 offerings. There aren't very many photos on their website that show what the camera does. I wonder if they really have them in production.
10-30 F3.5-5.6 and 10-100 f4.5-5.6
ISO 160-12800
HD movie 1920x1080
Looks to me like this is going to come in where iPhone can't, and come really close to, but not reach the quality and flexibility of the D5600.

Nikon 1 is the bottom of the mirrorless market. But Nikon has been rumored to be working on DX and FX mirrorless designs. I don’t see any TRULY credible rumors yet, though.
It’s a catch-22. If they give the market what it thinks it wants (total F-mount compatibility back to 1959), they will most likely exploit USERS, but few of the real benefits of mirrorless camera designs. If they introduce a new mirrorless lens line, with bodies optimized to it, they disappoint a huge part of their user base.
There's a rumor going around that Nikon is discontinuing the 1 series mirror less cameras and starting a completely new line.
I have a Nikon V2 - an older model - and it's great. I have the 10-100, the 70-300, the 18.5 and the 32mm lenses. The lenses are not cheap, but the glass on them is darned good in my book, but keep in mind I'm no techie. Here's one SOOC and exported into jpg from LR - so no processing. Took this one with the 70-300mm lens.

I don't know but they don't seem to sell very well but then the P&S don't sell well these days either.

You may have picked up an old internet blurb - Nikon have not further developed the 1 series in two years. Looks like they decided that the series was outdated and outmoded by the time it was launched
Nikon might have something up their sleeve regarding the Nikon1 mirror less line. That being said I like the retro style of the j5 but the camera is so tiny, having a vu finder is out of the question and the camera also takes a micro card which can be a hassle.
The only models available in the Nikon 1 line are the latest versions. The S2, J5, AND V3 are still being sold with all older models having been discontinued. Goofys link to the DPReview article also has a direct reply statement from Nikon confirming the line is still viable and continuing.
The latest rumor I got was that the new Nikon APS-C (DX) mirrorless cameras would be named the "Nikon 2" line of cameras.

That could be interesting...

And there new full frame mirror less would be Nikon F once again? But not F stands for Full Frame

Latest Rumor I got on the full frame mirrorless naming was the "Df2".
But these are still just rumors, actual names will be announced when the cameras, and their compatible lenses, are announced by Nikon.
