You don't turn it off, you change it to one of the below.
White balance
• Auto ¹
• Incandescent
• Fluorescent
1 Sodium-vapor lamps
2 Warm-white fluorescent
3 White fluorescent
4 Cool-white fluorescent
5 Day white fluorescent
6 Daylight fluorescent
7 High temp mercury-vapor
• Direct Sunlight
• Flash
• Cloudy
• Shade
• Preset manual

HERE'S how it's done.
I have found using a custom white balance gives the best results in artificial light.
Nikon calls it Preset manual white balance, or "PRE".
I use it even when I'm shooting raw. Saves a lot of time guessing.
The instructions for that are HERE.
Really fast once you get the hang of it.

Rick
Thanks. I suspected as much from reading the manual but wanted confirmation.

You shoot RAW? Leave WB on Auto and fix it in Post.

Most certainly. Check your manual.

Setting any white balance turns off auto.

Absolutely! And there are a number of good (and not-so-good) videos on YouTube explaining how to do this in post.
