@#^$% IT- help agian
Hey gang
I asked this a few days ago and tried all of the responses but I can't figure it out. All of my pictures are cropped to shreds. Is there a way to make, for example this picture, into a 4x6 or 5x7 in PSE10?
Thanks again- the more I learn the worse I get. I think my photos turned out better when I used to just take pictures, get them developed and be done with it

Can you post the original, un-cropped/un-edited version?

yes
OK I cropped these in PSE 10. See if they are doing what you want them to do when you open them in PSE10.
5x7 verticle
5x7 horizontal
4x6 horizontal
If you wanted a portrait format print of the scene, why did you shoot it in landscape?
The dimensions of your digital sensor are exactly the same proportions of your film frame was (roughly 3:2), and print sizes are the same as they always were, so why is digital harder to figure out that film? This just makes no sense to me. The camera is a tool, you are the photographer, learning how to use your tools to their full advantage is what the art is all about. Nothing has really changed all that much with the exception of your beimng able to see results in milliseconds rather than days, use that ability to make changes when you are shooting rather than trying to figure out how you can fix it later!
If I am understanding the question, I think I see the issue. You have to size/crop the image FIRST, then put your border or what ever on it.
If you were asking how to make the image you posted a 4x6, you are in trouble because you already made it a square.
So do what Patrick the Cop did FIRST. then you can add the sloppy border effect if you wish.
And before some goodie-goodie gets their panties in a twist, Sloppy Borders is what that effect (and others like it) is called. :-)
Hi MT
I didn't know that I wanted a portrait until about 30 minutes ago when I started messin' with the photo.
So that is one thing that I need to change, Captain. See, I'm always in a rush to start messin' with a pic, and then I crop it. I need to do it the other way around.
OK. The ratio for this image is not fitting anything I've ever seen, however, I got these with Lightroom:
4x5 - A little off each side.
5x7 - a little off the top.
8.5x11 - VERY close, only a tiny bit off each side.
IMO, the cropping is not enough to hurt the image.
4x5 crop
5x7 crop
8.5x11 crop
Hey Patrick,
So if I sent these pics to adorama or wherever to get developed, they would be printed "as is" in those standard sizes without being cropped? If so, that is EXACTLY what I am trying to do with all of my photos (hundreds of them)(although snapfish gives you the option to print in 4x5.3 without losing any photo).
But now I'm FIXATED on trying to figure this out and my family doesn't even recognize me anymore.
So how did you do it??? I appreciate everyone who is taking the time to chime in on this.
I could surely be wring, but it seems you are not paying attention to the answers. You cannot take a 4x5.3 image and make ANY standard size without losing image.
Take a picture > Crop it to whatever size/dimension you want. If you want a 4x6, crop it to 4x6. If you want a 5x7, crop it to a 5x7.
Print it.
You cannot make a 4x5.3 into a 5x7 without losing some real estate.
I would never send an 2:3 image to a print service and expect a 5x7 print. Send them what you want to get back.
Now this is meant to be a joke: How'd you do in geometry in high school?

Exactly - you either crop (as I did) or get white borders at the top & bottom or the sides. The only other possibility is a distorted photo from stretching.
Hi Snowbear,
Thanks for spending a Sunday afternoon helping me out. I don't have lightroom. I think part of my problem is is that I should have cropped first then played around second. The other problem is that I'm an idiot.

No problem. I don't agree that you are an idiot - different people get epiphanies at different rates.
So I'm trying to do something that is not mathematically possible, even with all of these fancy computer programs?
I'm 45 years old- geometry was too long ago to remember- but I did graduate with honors from Temple and was a "B" student in medical school. I'm not dumb- just in uncharted waters here.
Thanks, Captain, for trying to get through my dense skull.
