I know they are horribly out of focus, however, I thought they looked kind of artsy, like some sort of hip painting:)

The bottom image tells you a few things, both pluses and minuses.

On the plus side, you can crop into your 5DS-R pretty far to get an almost salvageable image.

But, from a BIF perspective, you should consider:

1. Getting closer. The EXIF below indicates 200mm on the lens. You need a longer lens or to get closer or find larger birds, any or all to get a larger image onto the sensor.
2. Shoot faster. A fast moving bird like this (?) gull should be more in the range of 1/800 to 1/1200.
3. You should consider more depth of field for more of the bird in complete focus, say maybe up to f/6.3 to f/8. And always focus or the bird's head or directly on the eye where possible.

These three ideas all need a higher ISO, but the balance is between a clear image that can be processed if too noisy verses these types of results. I'm not familiar enough with the AF on the 5Ds models to know if there's a ZONE option. Certainly, a cluster at the center point (zone or expanded) in AI Servo will be needed to track flying birds. And lots of practice and the expectation of keeping 1 in a 100 or less. You'll need to expose manually to control the variables mentioned above including seeking to expose at +1 to +2 over the meter's reading of the background sky or water.

Hi cdavis7820 ,

Maybe the first one but a bit too dark. But try this, convert to monochrome (B&W), increase brightness, contrast and sharpness gradually, eliminating some or if not most the mid tone, and see if it picks up more of interesting look.

Out of focus; shutter speed too slow for BIF; cropped too drastically. Not 'artsy' in my opinion.
