I’m a newbie. Been following UHH about 6 months and am learning every day. Thanks for all the great info
I have a Nikon D5600. I shoot mostly thru my viewfinder and have only occasionally used live view ( around the holiday dinner table). I’m wondering what situations dictate using live view ( or not ) ? I’m more comfortable using the viewfinder. I usually shoot my grand kids’ sports and on occasion landscape, wildlife and Astro (moon, sunrise, sunset).
Any guidance appreciated. Thanks. Paul

There is nothing that dictates anything other than your choice.

Having the choice is all that is important.

Situations where Live View is applicable:

Landscape composition. Composing while being able to "look up" at scene allows you to include some feature you might have missed. Getting you head out of the camera makes you more effective.
You can see shutter speed, f/stop, ISO changes as you make the adjustments.

I am sure others have more examples.

Use whichever is most convenient for you. Some people use live view to enlarge the image for precise focussing on a single point. The rear screen can be used for composing when the camera is held close to the ground or over the head. Other than that I have never found live view convenient for me.

I have several tilt screen cameras and the only time I've used tilt is to get low level shots (kids/dogs) or to shoot over other people.

If you use "live view" be aware that it will drain your battery....

Welcome to the hog....... Live view drains the battery quickly...I use it mostly for shots of the Moon and stars, because of the darkness it's easier to focus that way for me..... It's a matter of choice for each person.

I never use live view except when I need to be in the picture then I use the Nikon app on my Iphone so I have to leave the camera on live view mode but I actually don't use the live view. Some people like my nephew he never use the viewfinder and always the live view. So use whatever you like and shouldn't care about what others do.

Many times when I’m using a tripod I use live view in order to compose and focus a scene. It’s easier than trying to use the viewfinder and using the 10X live view zoom, I can get perfect focus.

I only use live view on the tilt when I have to put the camera where I can't use the viewfinder. I too keep things that drain the battery in the back of my mind. While I usually have a spare battery and card in my bag, stopping to change either is a pain in the butt and a possible missed opportunity.

With mirrorless you get live view in the viewfinder.

I use liveview when I need to get down close to the ground. Saves me from having to lie down on ground. I’m too old for that.

Some cameras employ touch screens to focus during live view. Mine don’t, so no idea on how well it works.
