I have seen so many Kestrels around but none willing to pose like this one. In the next tree was a Loggerhead Shrike, something that is a rare sighting for me. I stayed back so as to not scare it off, so my pictures are more distant. For those that don't know, Shrikes are about 9 inches (like Kestrels) and they are predatory songbirds that impale their prey on thorns or sticks for later snacking. Hmmm.

Really nice captures of these 2 birds, Katy!
I really like the colors and patterns on the feathers of the Kestrel.

Really love the second and fourth photo. Was he looking down at anything in particular?
Great Kestrel pics. I especially like the fourth photo with the tail feathers spread out. vz
NICE work Katydid ! - Love Kestrels ......I think you have an advantage with it being so cold - the birds seem lethargic and easier to approach ! ?
My favorite mini-raptor! Gorgeous shots of this male American Kestrel.
Nice going Katy. Sometimes backing off a little gives you a better image than a really close shot. Giving the bird some room is very natural.

Really nice shots! Kestrels are so beautiful and yet little tough guys. Gary

Thanks, dragonswing. I think that was right before it flew across the road, picked up a small morsel, and perched in the weeds.

I like that one, too, vonzip. Thanks for your comment!
Thanks, imagemeister. We are not that cold, but probably colder than you are. 55 degrees or more in the daytime. Arent'

Thanks, imagemeister. We are not that cold, but probably colder than you are. 55 degrees or more in the daytime. No lethargy noted here yet! Aren't your iguanas falling off trees from your cold spell?
