A few days ago my son and I were lucky enough to catch a photo of a snowy owl which I posted here already. The weather was bitterly cold and so we decided to leave the beach and open water and take a walk at Trustom Pond Reserve just down the road. It's more protected and we thought we could check out the marshes to see who was there. WRONG The ponds were frozen solid and the birds were standing on the ice waiting for spring. Then we heard it, sort of like a metallic moan spreading across the marsh toward us and then away from us. It would repeat every few minutes. It was the ice reacting to what tidal flow there was in the protected inlets. It was unsettling at first, it was loud, but then it was mesmerizing. You never know what you'll find .
That is quite fascinating. Go to youtube and search for
sounds of a frozen lake
There are quite a few recordings there.

Interesting story and photos Cmc65.
Not something I am likely to experience but I really like these landscapes!
Very nice, and have heard that sound a number of times, and like you was in awe!

Decades ago, in the dark of a January night, walking out on a deeply frozen lake Champlain in Vermont, we would hear the ice crack - very loudly - the cracking sound would start in one direction and shoot across the lake. We knew it was nothing to worry about - the ice was several feet thick, so it wasn't going to be moving...
I was ice fishing last week...it sounded like thunder all day! Trucks, cars go by...more thunder. We say it's making ice when the ice cracks loudly.
