I have been using a MacBookPro for many years. From one year to the next they usually don't change a lot. The Retina screen was an exception, it was a significant change. But in general I tend to replace my computer with a new model about every 5-6 years.
I am currently using an Early 2013 15" Retina MacBookPro. So time wise, I'm about due for a new one. But Macs don't slow down like PCs do with age (At least mine have not). In fact using the latest OS, High Sierra, I see some improvement in performance. So I am not in a huge hurry to replace it right now.
One big negative on the latest models is the loss of the magnetic power connector.
