Thanks a lot everyone for all your useful suggestions! I will be taking for sure: 28-300mm, along with 20mm, tripod, ND and CPL filters. I am not sure about the 150-600mm even though it will give more reach it is heavy and bulky. Instead I might carry 105mm for portrait shots. During this trip I will be both visiting family and doing photography. I am not a professional but an enthusiastic photographer and would like to capture as much as I can. Again thanks for your ideas.

I am fairly certain that there will be a shot or two that you would be able to use the 150-600mm for, but I seriously doubt it will be worth the size, weight, and worry/protection. My previous suggestion to include the 105mm along with the 20mm and 28-300mm was based on your expression for portraits. If the 28-300mm is adequate for portraits, do like the others have suggested and go with only the 20mm and 28-300mm.

Indian airlines other than Air India have weight restrictions, especially for checked baggage. DO NOT CHECK any of your equipment. If you plan on any night/evening trips plan on a fast pri me lens. Leave the big zoom at home. Three weeks in India last year. Also be careful with your street photography. Lots of beggars.

One zoom and one prime for low-light. I have found wider is more practical for travel. May want to consider a monopod and leave the tripod at home. Buy one that can double as a walking stick.

I was in India for about 10 days a couple of years ago; I was shooting a D300s at the time and only took it and 2 lenses - a Nikkor 17-55 f/2.8 and a Sigma 18-270. It was almost exclusively street scenes and I don't recall even taking the Sigma lens out of my hotel room. Had to do some cropping, but found it was easier to keep up with just one outfit. I carried the camera equipment with me on the plane.

Check your travel dates...remember that the monsoon always begins the third week in June.
