I do use an SB800 speedlight. I also have a flash bracket. I'll try again...
On-camera external flash on bounce mode.

First thing is NOT to use the flash on the camera, if you own the D810 and the 14-24 lens get your self a good rotating head flash unit. My favorite way is to aim my flash head (that is attached to the camera) up and behind me, no shadows.

Congrats. You just received a great lens manufactured by Nikon. One of Nikon's Holy Trinity of Lenses.

Yep... simply use an off-camera flash (which are far superior to cameras' built-in flashes for a number of reasons.)
An accessory flash in the hot shoe also may cause problems with shadows. Get an off-camera shoe cord and flash bracket, to be able to position the flash off to the side and higher up.
Most flash will not be able to cover 14mm wide angle, too. You'll likely see some light fall-off/vignetting in the corners when using the zoom at its widest, since many flash cover 16mm or 17mm, at best. Some don't even go that wide. So you may need some sort of diffusing accessory, to use flash with that (excellent) zoom at it's very widest.
