I was so thrilled today. Took a chance and walked out to the end of the breachway and looked across the water and saw this huddled against the cold wind from the water. We could only stay for about ten minutes ( I wasn't prepared to be out there ) but just as we'll not to disturb him too much. The light was not good, very cloudy and late (about 2:15, which means sunset in an hour this time of the year)I took 12 shots with more than half with him looking away from me. BUT I did get one. Happy doesn't begin to describe it.

Beautiful shot.
thanks Angler. It was nine degrees here this morning and not much better at the ocean with the wind blowing so hard. I was shivering so badly and the bird was so far away that I didn't think I had anything useable. But I got one.
Nice shot, what part of the world was this taken?

Thank you. We are in southern Rhode Island. We are having an influx of snowy owls on the east coast this year. I went out onto this beach while running errands today on a hunch and although I almost shivered to death in five minutes it paid off. I WILL be going back in the morning dressed for the weather this time.

Thanks von zip. In the frozen north they nest o the vast flat plains with just little rises and tufts of grass and feed on voles almost exclusively. When they come down here the dunes at the beaches are most like home and that's where you are most likely to find them. They will perch on a low post or fence also so watch the nesting boxes that stick up out of the marshes around the ocean. Good luck.I'm going back tomorrow but dressed for this weather this time. I had taken all my gear out of the jeep to deliver xmas gifts last week and hadn't put it back in again. Lesson learned.
