Good Morning............I'm thinking of buying 2 Nikons and have limited funds. A D3400 & a B700 for back up. I use a D3400 for work and its a work horse! I have several older Nikon lenses which are very sharp but very heavy, I'm an older guy now and love to take long walks with the camera and shoot what I see. Any opinions would help. Thank You for your attention.

It would be an idea if you could give us your limited budget? you say your are an older guy and like long walks.
So it sounds like you are concerned about weight? If this is the case why continue with the D3400 etc?
Why not look at quality cameras that are lighter in weight and just as good, if not better than heavy Nikon's.

Hi..........Thank You for your reply! My budget is 1K or less and I'm open to suggestions but I've used Nikon since forever and have the lenses.
I also want 20Megs or better, and I'm open to used if purchased from B&H or KEH or someone as good.

Why exactly do you need a back up camera?

Is there any reason you can't use the D3400 for your weekend walks?

Nikon eliminated the ultrasonic sensor cleaner on the D3400. All of Nikon's recent DSLR cameras have had that feature. Its built-in flash has only one-half the power of the flash in the D3300. I think Nikon is cutting costs lately. I would probably try to find a D3300. Amazon has a lot of brand new cameras that are one or sometimes two generations behind the current model. If you get the D3400, I would recommend getting a filtered blower for when dust appears in the photos. I have the Koh Global Hepa Jet Air II blower. It has a large hepa filter, an anti-static filter, and a one-way check valve. Its bulb is made of medical grade PVC. Blowers that have rubber bulbs can shed fine particles that can end up on the sensor. The PVC bulb won't do that. Adorama Camera has it and you can purchase it directly from Koh Global.

Hi Folks 1. I probably don't need a back up I'm just used to having one, that just saved me 375 thanks rpavich.
2. D800/850's are a little pricey but I can keep my eye out for a used one. Thanks Mark
3. I didn't know about the 3400/3300 comparison, I'll check out the 3300 Thanks CO

I think you need to check first what cameras are compatible with your lenses. Are the lenses autofocus lenses? If so do they have internal focusing motors or is the autofocusing connected to a motor in the camera. If they need a camera with internal autofocus motor you need a camera from the D7xxx line of cameras.

I would suggest the D7100. You can get a new one at the Nikon Store for $799.95 and a refurbished one at B & H for $629.00. I have 1 & it's a fine camera. It also will use the old lenses.

Lightweight DSLR Nikons go through the D5xxx line, after that, they get heavier and bulkier. I personally like the articulating screen on my D5100, if it is not a necessity for you, get the D3300.

If you have used or using, a D3400 why not get one of those. You have lenses that will probably work on that camera already. I'm not as young as I used to be either but still manage to carry a 4x5 from place to place when going out photographing. I carry a D800e daily. I think photography may be the incentive to do some exercise daily so I can enjoy my making photographs.

I keep color pixels in one and b/w pixels in the other. Old school! 😂

My walk-about rig is one body with a 18-250 mm lens. Then I always wish I had brought more with me. So, I bought a scooter. Now I can spend more time changing lenses than taking photos.

Both the D5xxx series and D7xxx series (body) would be within your budget and both have the same 24 megapixel sensor. My friend and I both upgraded, last year. He bought the D7200 and is very happy with it. I could afford the D7200 but I opted for the D5500 because it's smaller, more compact and has a touch screen I find very useful. As UHH members often suggest; go to a store and handle each one. Check out how heavy each is, where the buttons are located, etc. Make sure your older lenses fit on each, too. We both had old macro lenses from our 35mm days and it took a little filing to get the lenses to fit into place.
