Mmmm, fresh baked.

When's the last time you baked your desiccant?

Not long ago if you consider plugging a device similar to these into an electrical socket baking it. I have one like those but it heats and dries the desiccant by electricity, making it very handy to use.

Don't get to have a lot of use for a drying agent. Can you tell me how large these are and how you use them? Right now I'm motivated to get set up to photograph the baking that will be coming out of our oven in a few minutes. The smell of mincemeat pies, short bread, cinnamon buns and biscotti is wafting through our house. Does your oven give off any delicious smells?

I have a couple of the electric versions but I still think the old box versions work better. Those I bake at 400 degrees for 30 minutes and they last (hold green color) much longer. I don't know if I trust the color indicators on the electric because even after they turn green, they get back to pink too fast and it is not a humid location where they are placed.

I guess there is some relationship to container size, heat and time, I just pulled a 450 gram box from a gun cabinet and that brand calls for baking at 240 degrees for 3 hours.

I'm using Hydrosorbent OSG-40, which says 3 hours at 300 degrees F to recharge. Depending on the storage container, they sometimes go a few months before the orange color is faded enough to show baking is needed.

I never would have guessed it needs that much heat and time. Learn something new every day!

I don't bother backing desiccant. I just go to the dollar store and buy one of these things. Cheap and effective.

The dimensions aren't listed in the ad, at least that I could find. They look a bit large for putting inside a camera bag which is where I keep my electric one.

After unsealing the container, I simply place it into a plastic storage box with lid, along with any cameras, lenses, bags, or whatever I want to keep dry and protect from humidity.

Mine are in plastic cases. Instructions say to microwave 15-45 seconds, until the pink material turns blue. But the cases are hot when removed from the microwave!
